Or pry around the characters to learn about them.
But i want that IG - like DA:O has it, ME has it and propably many other games have it.
I agree that system could be expanded to give even more tooltips. But until it happens, for just about anything you don't know, the Wiki will tell you. And the reason I tell people to go there is there are other open-source online info sources for things like Faerun deities, but they contain a lot of info extraneous to the BG3 game itself. The BG3 Wiki focuses only on things found IN the game.
As someone who works as a CEM for ~5 years i can tell you: Bad answer. If i would think like that, i would loose my job tomorrow ^^ BG3 Wiki is nice and all but not a longterm Solution, also a DirectLink to the Wiki would be incredible bad since everyone who hasn't a second monitor would have to use Alt+Tab all the time, if they wanna get more background information around Deities, Characters etc.
I wouldnt say its "peak" but ME and DA:O did an amazing job, especially ME with the voiced Codex Entries, only bad thing is you can't listen to them while you are playin the game. Especially ME1 "exploration" is really anoying after a while, having some sort of "IG Podcast" in the background would have been great.
I personally think it would make for an excellent mod, if Larian won't do it themselves. Some kind of in-game browser that just goes to a referenced Wiki page. Of course, BTW, the Wiki contains walkthroughs, so now that starts to get, well, "cheaty" which is why Larian might not do it themselves.
Modders might not have done it already because until Larian opens up more code to modders, it might not be doable yet.
