Can you do both Mountain Pass and Underdark in a single playthrough?
So as to not miss any story beats?

Yes!

I recommend doing the mountain pass first but as long as you don't COMPLETE one path before going back to the other one you can wander through both areas.

So basically as soon as I make it to Moonrise towers fast travel to the Goblin Camp to get to the Underdark?

Yes, I did the underdark first and then doubled back

I think the Underdark is easier, so run that first, but don't enter the shadow-cursed lands(Moonrise Tower area) until you do both.

Moonrise is too far as far as I am aware. I've been able to wander into Grymforge but I was able to leave from there to go do the mountain pass.

Yep. As long as you don't finish the mountain pass area and continue on you can do both. Both Underdark and mountain pass connect to the Act 2 area. As long as you don't go there you can go back.

No. You don't have to go that far. The warning about finishing up quests in the area is honestly misleading. I had the impression that going to the mountain pass and into the Creche is act 2 only to find out that act 2 is you going further into the mountain past the gith creche.

Basically, finishing the githyanki patrol and going further is not the end of act 1. Going further into the pass is the end of act 1.

The elevator to act 2 in underdark is supposedly act 2, but you can explore the entirety of underdark up to the grymforge and still call it act 1.

To be fair, I never checked what happens in the elevator in the underdark. I missed that and explored the grymforge before heading to the creche and going to act 2/Cursed Lands before a friend told me the elevator to moonrise is just after the duergar harbor.

The are a only a few encounters/quests in the first zone prior to region changes that actually get advanced to failure/missed by proceeding. You can go to both Mountainpass/Underdark without issues as well as Zone 1(forget its name, if it has one).

You will only get locked out of Mountain Pass, Underdark, and Zone 1 after confronting Ketheric in the story progression. Once it gives you another warning inside of the Shadowlands before Act 3 that is when you will actually be fully barred from earlier zones.

I probably should have mentioned I already finished the Creche and found Elminster if it matters but I'm guessing it doesn't?

You're locked out after you find Nightsong, which is one step earlier. That also finishes most of Act 2 sidequests as well

Mountain pass doesn't lock you out of earlier zones but be warned that it 'passes time' and some events might resolve themselves

I think it might mainly just be the druid grove and maybe goblin camp that change, but I'm not entirely sure

Going to mountain pass locks out some timed quests around the druid grove. If you do everything in the starting zone before going out to MP or UD you should be fine. I personally did aunty Ethel to get to lvl5, went underdark to get lvl6 and loot. and only then did mountain pass to get to lvl7. Fight in the creche was harder than anything in the underdark.
