Why is Astarion looking in the mirror, but not in the water?
Vampires don't reflection in the mirror because mirrors have silver. But. Water don't have it. Why Astarion isn't looking in the water to see they reflection?

He doesn't have a reflection full stop, so it's nothing to do with silver mirrors. He literally says that he doesn't even remember what he looked like, as it's been so long. I think if any other reflective surface would work, he would have noticed in the 200+yrs he's been a vampire slave

If he didn't have a reflection full stop we wouldn't have seen him, because light would past through him. This is physics.

he could also mirror image himself and see one of his several mirror images, no? do vampires cast mirror images?

If this were the real world, he wouldn't exist at all. Don't apply real-world physics to a fantasy game. Also, this:

is a faulty assumption. At least, I don't recall this being mentioned in this game's vampire lore.

I think this might have something to do with magic, vampires and all that other stuff that does not care about physics.

yes and people can literally throw fireballs from their hands, i dont think irl physics applies in the forgotten realms

The 5E monster entry doesn't even mention the Dracula cliche among a vampires peculiarities.

Vampire Elves and laws of actual physics don't mix

Well duh, how else would What We Do in the Shadows exist?

Silver is for werewolves. Now if you had claimed it was because mirrors are made of garlic, well, that wouldnt be any better, but at least it would be for the right type of fictional monster.

The real reason vampires didn't have reflections in old literature is because dumb dumbs used to think reflections showed your soul and in old literature vampires were soulless.

Ehhh not really.

Basically I think the idea is that light reflects OFF HIM as normal so we see him but then it won't reflect off any other surfaces afterwards. Obviously it's best to not think about how light knows it's hit a vampire and it shouldn't reflect again, but...

It can still activate cells in our eyes.

Though you could ask if it just vanishes and violates conservation of energy instead of reflecting, but I'm pretty sure magic does that all over the place anyway so it's not a big deal.

Though the next question is, can the light still refract? Maybe vampires can rig up a device to use refraction enough times to change the angle of light to see themselves.

Yes, I know this is all pretty silly lol

Silver is actually the reason for the no reflection myth, it was thought to be a pure metal and so brought bane to impure creatures. Mirrors used to be made with silver backings, this is why vampires didn't reflect.
The myths have evolved of course, typically (and more relevantly in D&D) vampires now just don't reflect period and werewolves have weaknesses to silver weapons.

There used to be similar myths that they could be killed by a certain type of wood.... uh... maybe acacia? I know vikings thought Ash wood was holy
