Does mage hand get better?
Can I eventually use it to yeet myself across gaps or throw enemies larger than imps around?

Nope. Larian dropped the ball on that.

only really useful for pulling levers and throwing backpacks in hazardous or hard to reach places.

Nope, Mage hand is supposed to be very weak and mostly used to move small objects, it has some uses. Later you get a telekinesis spell that can do that and you have tons of other options to throw enemies off a cliff (Bumping spells and explosive arrows are plenty.)

It's a utility spell. Like Knock or Fly. There're a lot of small holes it can get into.

I have my people hang back with missle weapons ready, and then use it to open unlocked doors when I know enemies are on the other side. Safer than opening those doors ourselves.

That's actually really clever. There's quite a few spells I'm going to have to think outside of the box more when using.
Vine whip is another randomly useful spell that I didn't see the beauty of until Act 3. You can use it like a whip to pull levers that are out of reach.

Mage hand usually could only lift up to 5lbs. So it actually does more than what mage hand normally would be able to.
