You can use Mage Hand to move his backpack over to him.

His backpack has two misty step scrolls, so you can use either the spell or a scroll yourself with one of your characters and take one before tossing it to him and use the spare for yourself, in case you only have one scroll, or want to save a second scroll or spell slot.

Seems silly that hes capable of using a misty step scroll, normal 5e does not allow that. I just healed him then set them off, he ran through just fine without taking fatal damage.

There are also 'ledges' you can walk on then jump to the backpack, hidden in the dark on the left side of the cave if you've no potions etc. My weak ass skinny legged Bard found a way!
