What difficulty are you playing? I brought wyll with me and his 2 fireballs were enough and satisfying af. Also, you can use area denial spells like the ranger's spike growth, etc.

if you take a look at the saving throws the enemies have wis is low so try using cc spells that focus on that I used one hypnotic pattern and incapacitated 7 or 8 if I remember makes the fight a lot easier

Crowd control is the single most powerful thing in 5e. Bards, Wizards, Druids, Clerics all have ample access to CC. Hypnotic pattern can completely shut down a limitless number of enemies for 2 turns. Having a bard as my Main has trivialized the whole game on balanced. No one even dies anymore after level 4.

Just bring spell Casters and Shadow heart, the spell caster can do a AOE spells and murder those enemies, you only need 3 turns for the easy difficulty and then switch back.

I used stone wall to keep the mobs spawning on the left side from being able to reach it. I then used that Psychic Force push to keep knocking groups of enemies into the water. This was on tactician.

Got wall of fire but apparently not a high enough level to use it.

Wall of fire is a level 4 spell that Gale may learn. Honestly I just use shadowheart's spirit guardian (it creates a ring of holy fire - radiant damage kills mobs) on the stairs + a few few turn undead.

Like others said if you have scroll of darkness or any of you companions use scroll of darkness to make the soldiers who use range miss.

I think people suggestions here are helpful.

If you playing tactician (sorry i cant help i haven't done it myself)

I see most of tactician using Boxes to block the portal though - its a lot of preparation BEFORE the fight

me and my friend killed so many of them that the looting at the end of those few rounds was a pain... but i guess thats what you get from wizard, monk, karlach and shadowheart... fireball goes brrrrr
