We don’t really know yet in EA, but seeing as how most important characters seem to be searching for it and how much power it seems to have… it may be a special vessel for the soul of a god or other powerful being.

It might be similar to something from Planescape: Torment. In that game, based in D&D 2e, you could recruit a Githzerai companion that had a similar artifact. The Githzerai artifact was a puzzle that helped the player character understand the companion and part of their history together (the pc had amnesia).

As it's presented right now, Shadowheart may have some amnesia/memory issues, and it may be that the artefact is part of how she regains her memories. That's my thoughts anyway.

Imagine if it is an artifacts to bring back the nameless one from Torment.
He after all was meant to have a hand in the Gith rebellion against the mindflayers, if I recall.

Inside is a trapped spoiler. Once it gets out, you'll magically be unable to enjoy BG3. Vlaakith is searching for it to protect Larian's profits until the game is released, at which point, nobody will care whether or not you enjoy the game because you've already bought it.

as of early access, we do not know exactly what it is. But you will learn something about as you move through act 1. I don't think there's a way to miss it besides killing her and not taking the device?
