Should this be classed as "homebrew"?
For a game with a full license to use the 5e ruleset, I am surprised all of the changes made. Do we think this is now effectively homebrew?

It was always homebrew to a certain extent. With anything like this, it's likely that an individual will like some changes and not others.

A lot of things from 5e just dont translate to the videogame format

And this is larian, environmental interactions were always going to be a thing, I'd be heartbroken if they hadn't been a thing.

5e dnd rule set is not even balanced on table top, almost everything I hear is X class is clearly superior and Y class is trash.
Then add in the fact that TT and video games are not the same so a good amount of the rules need to be adjusted. By all accounts this is a faithful version of 5e, faithful does not need to be pinpoint accurate.

You also need to add in almost every 5e Table will have homebrew, or there interpretation of rules

Look at any game using the DnD (or any TTRPG) ruleset and you'll find it to be homebrew. TTRPG systems don't fully translate well when in video game format, so changes often need to be made to make it work better.

I'm not sure BG3 has been changed anymore than other versions in the past. To be fair though, 5e itself has so many different rule sets and changes over time that I guess it kinda depends what version of 5e you're comparing BG3 to.

Thanks for the feedback, it seems all of you agree that it is not possible to implement the 5e ruleset in a game. I would like to point out that Solasta has proved this is not the case.

I am just hoping for a good game, but is it weird larian would pay for a license and not make full use of it.
Wraith Jul 25, 2023 @ 3:43am
Even Solasta which some people hail as the true DND has homebrew so that kinda actually proved the point

The amount of things larian changed isn’t that crazy really

The stuff missing aren’t dealbreakers and some class like ranger and monk definitely needed the buff

Presumably WotC is OK with the changes as there is a license agreement.

Hi Wraith, I disagree. Ballpark they are probably at 50% of the rules at best.
Wraith Jul 25, 2023 @ 3:52am
Well list them and it probably not 50 percent lol
Ragnar Jul 25, 2023 @ 3:54am
They have done some ok changes, and some unnecessary changes that hasnt made the game any better. A lot of people have asked for a core option that follows the rules more closely, but sadly we are not getting it.

For sure the modders will do their best to make it more close to D&D in the future

its obviously homebrew with the basic 5e rules applied as best they can
lost_soul Jul 25, 2023 @ 3:59am
From the beginning larian said it would be based on 5e but they absolutely would change the rules to make a better game.

Solasta is a ♥♥♥♥ game tbh. But base 5e in general os a really really bad version of dnd. Its way to simplified, the spells are seriously nerfed compared to earlier versions + less customization and so forth. Its basically dumbed down dnd.

Larian implementing homebrew rules is a good thing.

The superior version of DND for me will always be 3.5

Of course it could be tweaked to be better but the foundation on it is much better in my opinion

No way 50% is accurate. Large changes I can think of:
-No dodge or held action
-various needed changes to classes
-some changes to spells
-weapon "actions"
-removed multiclassing restrictions
-shove as a bonus action
-drinking potions as a bonus action

We don't know about scroll usage at release. We don't know about multiclassing changes yet.

Anything else major?
