Collect all companions or…?
The “meet me at camp” feature is interesting, but I’m wondering how it’s going to work long term. Are characters going to be fine sitting on the sidelines until act 3? Or are you going to have to pick your four like in Divinity OS2 by the end of act one? I figured I’d have to commit to a party of four from the start, but if there’s no reason not to grab everyone you can, then why not?

I believe that Larian has eliminated the need to pick your companions by the end of act 1 and now all of them will follow you through the game.

I think some companions will leave you, or even kill each other

I'm sure some stuff will come up at various points, but we won't know for sure till 1.0.

No act 1 cull like DOS2, though.

I am hoping I still have the option to kill Astarion on the beach when I first meet him.

You can certainly attempt to collect them all.

Whether they'll all stick around for the duration of the campaign is another matter entirely.

I imagine the only reason why they would leave camp is if you make major decisions they do not approve of, which can already happen in EA. In rest it might just work like DA:O, they just hang around in camp and have some dialogues about decisions you made.

At least a couple of them are either/or, right? As I understand it, you can't get both Halsin and Minthara.

Yeah, I believe this is the case.

If I were to speculate then you might run into issues long-term if you don't tend to their companion quests before progressing acts, but Larian has removed the requirement to pick three a la DOS2

That pretty normal though for games like this

If your not juggling companions around to get approval with them all you tend to not be liked by the one you have just sitting in the camp

That's a good point, you're probably right about that.

For a game like this with a lot of replay ability, I think I’d prefer to just pick a four and stick with it the whole game. Making the custom character fill the niche in that group. However then the question is what happens if you just don’t send people to camp? Do they leave the story, die like OS2 or still find a way to show up?

If EA is anything to go by they go their own way if you never pick them up and some end up dead when you see them again. (laezel for example)

Shadowheart has a couple of show up again moments and then one force moments where she force to go to your group by the plot item lol

So what happens when she's not there to use that item in the first act then?
