Multiclass question. Cleric/Necromancer
A question to all you D&D experts out there. How valid would a Cleric/Necromacer multiclass be?

I haven't really played a D&D based game since Icewind Dale 1 and 2 and back then, I could with a human cleric play up to lvl 12, dual class to Wizard/Necromancer and once that caught up with the cleric level, I had a Necromancer with 12 levels of cleric at the cost of just being about 1 level behind a pure wizard. That will of course not work in BG3.

For RP reasons, I like the idea of a cleric, who deals a lot with healing, death and resurrection, eventually starting to drift more into the the pure necromatic arts. But with the imo stupid character level cap of 20 in 5E (and cap of 12 in BG3) I feel like there won't be enough room to make a potent Cleric/Necromancer. I still lean towards going for it in my first playthrough at launch, so it would be nice to hear if it would make a character that sucks, or if it could turn out pretty ok.

You could just play spores Druid.

Cleric 1/Wizard X is solid. No reason it could not be Necromancer. With Knowledge Cleric domain and Rock Gnome you can even be a little bit of a skill monkey for History, Arcana, and Religion, which would seem on brand for your concept - read too much FORBIDDEN KNOWLEDGE.

Those 2e games allowed you to play with available XP rather than available levels, making caster multiclasses potentially very potent. You could effectively gain high levels with two different casting classes and really pop off late game.

5e really isn't like that. I'd recommend just picking a necromancy-adjacent cleric and playing that. If you combine the two classes, you'll wind up with neutered spellcasting.
