I love Astarion and according to Larian he's one of the most popular characters overall.
He's just so smarmy and fun :P And very awkward and cute when his secret is discovered.

Isn't this a bit like saying do you actually like a person, or just want to be with [human/man/woman/appearance/height/fame/money/race/etc]? No person is just one thing, they're a collection of different attributes and most of us need to feel attracted to most of them to be attracted to the person. Being a vampire is a part of who he is, adding heaps of extra mystery, intrigue, danger, among many other things. It absolutely adds tons to his charm. There's the selfish aspect of potentially becoming an immortal if he made you one as well. I'm a massive fan of games like Vampire: The Masquerade (or VTMB for PC), and movies like the Twilight series, so I get it.

But Astarion is plain evil, so sadly that's never gonna work.

I don't care one way or the other about him, since he'll probably be benched most of my games.
The way I see it, he's basically a light form of Zevran from DAO.
But while Zevran had the wit and style to make Morrigan and Leliana seethe and mald uncontrollably during party banter, it seems vamp boy, so far at least, is just a beauty parlor sassy poofter. Since, his moniker as "we have Zevran at home".

He's alright, he grows on you eventually. his utility as a thief is what makes him very useful.

He'll probably be in my main party on full release along with Shadowheart and Karlach

his only redeeming quality (imo) is picking locks and disarming traps. the whole gay rapist part of his personality aside, if in party he heavily disapproves of any conflict or confrontation and any dialog that isnt lying and deception just for the hell of it. regardless of which side of good or evil i play on he will be constantly disapproving and getting salty about me playing the game so kind of makes for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ party member. also hes just plain annoying.

I've not got too far in the game so idk if he turns into an idiot, but so far I love him. I'm a sucker for affected, posh charmers. Lazael, or however you spell it is the one who irritated me from the first moment I met her. She comes across as an amoral, opinionated, self-righteous zealot, while Astarion gives off more of a jaded, been there, done that, survivor type.

I would have preferred Astarion to be more of a male Minthara, a lawful evil smart vamp. Unfortunately he comes across as a bit of a weak personality. It will have to do though, I don't enjoy playing good characters and he has the only alignment that fits somewhat.

Thinking about it, it seems we lack more strong-willed male evil characters, thats a shame. Someone like PFWotR Regill would be interesting to have.
