He is a great character in my opinion. It's fine not to like him because he is an A-hole many times. But if you really dislike a character that is proof of good writing aswell. For example take joffrey in GoT everyone hate that little bastard. And that make him a great character.

He's very practical and doesn't really care what I do or don't do.
This depends on WHY they hate the character.
For example many of us HATED Kai Leng and Reaver because both of those are instances of the GMPC insulting us and abusing their power and then not allowing us to defend ourselves.
And if the player is supposed to be including the character in their party then it is bad writing to write the character in such a way that the player cannot stand them and has no in character reason to keep them around.
