Friend Spell is Hostile: A Public Service Announcement
The game doesn't outright tell you this but if you cast Friend spell on an NPC they will remember you doing it once the spell wears off and they will kill you. Therefore, kill them first. Thank you and be safe.

"Once the spell ends, the creature knows it was Charmed" - yeah people tend not to like being mind controlled.

I think though that Great Old One warlocks get a perk later on that cancels that out. Not sure though

Not quite and only for that specific ability - it's a charm that doesn't wear off, it has to be removed (or you cast it on someone else).

Yeaaaah that's something I definitely think needs to be tweaked.
It says they will remember and "accuse you". I've read from the D&D rules that it can make characters "unfriendly" but doesn't necessarily mean hostile.
(This next part is debatable) Also, maybe depending on the situation it was used should make it more forgiving. If you're invading a hostile area or an area where people already don't trust you and charm someone to get past them, yeah they should definitely attack you once it wears off. If you charm maybe a friendly NPC for something trivial, especially to deescalate a situation or something like that, it shouldn't immediately make someone want to kill you after they're no longer charmed.

Also this might be a bug, but I used "Friends" on Zevlor when I just got to the camp to prevent him from attacking each other. Later I did Kagha's quest with the Shadow Druids and went to go report to Zevlor that he and the Tieflings and stay in the camp and he was immediately hostile towards me. Although after reloading a save, I left my character outside and went into his quarters with the rest of the party and he didn't become hostile, although I couldn't talk to him for a bit cause he kept saying "Not now" and "How did this happen? I need to find evidence." Once my other companions were able to talk to him finally, I went in with my character and it wasn't Hostile anymore

Nah, it`s rather obvious how that works.

What are some good uses for this spell, if it turns the npc into a ticking time bomb?

literally none because all it does is gives you advantage on persuasion checks, you can just take thaumaturgy and get the same benefit without ever making them hostile.

lot of cantrips are worthless. blade ward, true strike, friends.

That's interesting. I read a player guide on picking pockets that basically boiled down to hide nearby until the person who notices isn't angry anymore. Friends seems to work in a similar manner.

"Once the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed..." yeah this part is obvious. "... and might accuse the spellcaster." this part doesn't make it abundantly clear they will be hostile. Accusing someone implies you'd think you have the option to talk to the NPC after the fact and at least try to talk your way out of it. Not immediate combat with the person who was charmed . If that's what is supposed to be intended, they could at least say "... and might attack the spellcaster."

If you use Friends to get the NPC(s) to leave, they won't become hostile since they are gone. A few early encounters Friends worked great. Against gobos that stick around town, it did not help avoid combat. Against a non-hostile guard you can just keep using Friends to avoid combat.
