When to use inspiration?
Hello!

When do you guys think it's best to use inspiration?

It feels really bad to have to spend 2 or 3 points just to pass a single check but it feels just as bad not to spend any and fail the check. It's a lose lose situation.

Does anyone have any methods to make this less annoying? Maybe you limit yourself to one inspiration per check?

I use it when i want to success at something i deem important.
Like saving the thiefling girl or burning the rogue vampire hand with a cantrip.
I am very liberian in its use.
Mostly because shadowheart guidance makes winning most conversations easy.
Especial after they nerf the difficulty a lot.
Serious it used to be bad.

You should be getting it fairly regularly if you have a full party, so you're sort of handicapping yourself if you're not using it. Usually always succeeds, so would suggest just using 1.

You’ll enjoy this game a lot more if you stop thinking about min maxing, guides, and when you “should” do things.

Approach the game as a story, you’re the main character. Don’t reload saves to get an item you saw in a guide or anything. Enjoy it to yourself and play it your way - then later use guides and things if u want.

Maybe not you specifically but just speaking in general

I only use it if I'm worried it will cost me loot. If I have to fight someone with a failed test, I don't care... failure means you get to kill them and take their loot. Bonus!

Most of the things you can use inspiration on aren't going to change the game much, at least as presented in EA. That said, as a gamer, I would try to keep two banked just in case. If I have three or four, I am much more liberal until I get down to two.

In EA i used it alot. You can get inspiration for alot of things anyway. So it's not like you can never get more of them.

When to use it?
When you don't want to savescum. :lunar2019grinningpig:

Some examples for bards buff:
- dialog / pickpocketing checks in combination with shadowhearts advantage buff (later on inspiration rolls 1D8)
- on mage before casting fireball or any other great spell which you don't want to fail, normally you cast it one time anyway in combat so it's not too annoying

Concerning save scumming for dialogs / pickpocket: You can either "just go with the fail" which is also quite interesting, did it myself in the current run because there are no real consequences to anything in this game, at best the path splits for 10 secs or you have to fight something but that's it. The choices you made doesn't matter in any way, you can even kill every npc if you want and still proceed the story.

On the other hand if you want to roleplay like a good or bad guy you can consider save scumming and Larian also mentioned to implement maybe "take 10" as an option which means every roll is increased by 10 which makes 50%+ rolls an auto win but there were no new news about that. Maybe fans will implement it as mod or at least give infinite inspiration points. ;)

I have like 5 right now, get to a check and obviously I want to succeed the check so when I fail one, I spend one, then I fail again so I spend another and fail again. Then I've spent like all 5 of my inspiration on a single check and what's funny is there's another check right after it and I don't have anymore inspiration to spend on it so I just lose it.

I'd hoard them for the important plot parts of the game

I can’t play the game at all because I feel like I’m wasting inspiration points by using them on unimportant things but at the same time I really want to succeed at those things.

Should I use them all at once or limit myself to only use 1 each time?

Use it when you don't want to accept the consequences. I've used them even in NPC affection dialogues because I didn't want a companion to hate me. Minor things. Or maybe I used one on a disarming roll because I didn't want to take damage from failing. Whenever you think something is going to suck if you fail, use inspiration to avoid failure.

Then again, not everything needs to be avoided. Sometimes it's okay to fail. It just makes things harder, not impossible. You can beat the game with the personality of a sponge.

I'd like to use them until I succeed but then I'd quickly run out of them.

If it’s something you really want, then use them.
You get one every time you do anything that matches any party characters background, so often. Shadowheart gets them for deception stuff, Wyll for folk hero stuff, Lazael from soldier stuff. Just use em if you want brother

I decided to spend a maximum of 1 every time. That way it works like the tabletop version where you only have 1 at a time.

I don't think anyone here suggested I should do that. You lot really weren't helpful at all.
