Friends spell is getting me killed.
Do NOT use it on Kaghra to boost your chances of saving the kid through dialogue, soon as it ends the penalty kicks in and the ENTIRE ROOM goes hostile against you. Also WHY DOESN'T THE GAME PAUSE IN MENUS!?

Friends 5e definition.
For the duration, you have advantage on all Charisma checks directed at one creature of your choice that isn't hostile toward you. When the spell ends, the creature realizes that you used magic to influence its mood and becomes hostile toward you. A creature prone to violence might attack you. Another creature might seek retribution in other ways (at the DM's discretion), depending on the nature of your interaction with it.

Works as intended, don't use if you want to stick around or come back.
And no it's not a good spell unless you want to create chaos, which some characters do want to.
That's not the description in game and the "Game DM" deciding "Everyone who has it cast on you now wants to slit your throat" is kinda screwed up. "MIGHT accuse the spellcaster" so far every time I've cast it, has been "Immediately the guards are summoned to kill you" reactions. Either the attitude penalty needs to be reduced or the description needs to be changed "Using this spell will always get you accosted after the duration is over".

I don't know what you were expecting?
I wasn't expecting INSTANT DEATH SENTENCE, that's what I wasn't expecting. Making it basically completely useless as you're penalized for using it. Kinda messed up actually. "Take this seemingly useful spell! Oh wait it basically makes everyone attack you soon as it's over, HAHA!"

What did you think was going to happen? Especially in a hostile situation? "Oh gee, no harm no foul, you rascal, don't try to manipulate my mind with your sorcery again or else! teehee!"

Think about the consequences of your actions.

I dunno, a chewing out? Someone asking for an apology or some money to smooth things over? Potentially nothing because the description says *might*.

It does tell you that the person you use it on will know you used it on them; did Kagha seem like someone who would brush that off?

I think it's important to remember that there is another 'social' cantrip called Thaumaturgy (I think). It gives bonuses to Intimidation and Performance if I recall.

No it's not. it's DnD 5e PHB description. Which is what BG3 mostly uses.
Just don't use the spell, it's a meme spell.
And we don't know how DM (Larian) implemented it in the full game for different situations.
Kagha is short tempered and neutral character at best. She would attack you for that, she does not like the Player character at all and does not trust you.
Use friends only in cases you are sure you will never see the effected NPC again (which is never in BG3).

Use Guidence and Enhance ability for similar results and no penalties.

Also Google is your friend. Read a bit about DnD 5e. It helps a lot if you want to make good decisions in BG3.

Ah yes, Friend. It took me a while to figure out why the guards in the grove kept pestering me every minute or so, since I was doing nothing ... except I used Friends to convince the guards to leave me alone after I used Friends to stop the fight between Aradin and Zevlor.

It doesn't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ matter what the description says OUTSIDE the game. IN the game, all it says is "MIGHT accuse the caster". The Attitude adjustment is high enough to cause someone to MURDER you seems a little extreme. And so far every time it's basically done that I've cast it on someone. I wanted to get better prices for my gear since the blacksmith was literally charging 200% for stuff I could otherwise afford.

Here's a tip. Don't talk to them. Stealth kill the snake at range and walk out. Trust me....

I used Friends on Shadow Heart to get her approval.
After the spell ended she disapproved of that. *shrug*

Honestly I love the irony in "Friends" being one of the quickest ways to make permanent enemies...I hope they never change that...xD
I hope they do change it because right now, it's *worthless* for playing a Diplomat.

Who woulda guessed that the short-term mind control spell is bad for diplomacy.

much like actual D&D, the friends spell is a trick, because the thing you have to understand about spells is that: they are all considered to be attacking the target, even if they do not do any physcial damage.

you compelled them to like you, thats mind control by any other name.

much like how you're not gonna wanna perfume sprayed upon you at a shopping mall, you're not gonna want people to cast magic upon you all willy nilly.

1. It does matter because the game itself uses 5e as a base.

2. Might means it's possible. Context is the point of the word "might." Like what was already said, Kagha does not like you, and you are quite literally temporarily brain washing her to get your way. So you are the hostile actor in this scenario, not Kagha. It functions this way because it's similar to how 5e (what the game is based on) functions.

Just how it is. It's not meant to be used as a free ticket. Now you know.
