Also consider multiclassing into 3 levels of thief to get cunning action and the feat sharpshooter
Gloom stalker is widely favored as one of the best. You could also multi-class yes.
They aren't my favorite because most of their turns are like "I shoot my bow," but it's near certain that about half of the internet feels differently, so you should feel free to draw your own conclusions too. :)
The beastmaster subclass lets you have pets, the Archery fighting style is separate.
You don't have to choose.
choose ranger
at level 2 pick the archery style
lvl 3 beastmaster subclass --> you can now summon pet
depending on how strong later lvl pets are consider multiclassing into 3 rogue-->thief so you get extra bonus action and easier hide
buy or craft arrows thos DoS2 arrows
Yes. At some point, you will have to choose a Fighting style - this can be archery. At another, you can choose a Subclass.
edit: for example moon druid get owlbear shape at lvl6, so maybe beastmaster gets a new pet or those lvl3 pets get stronger
Yes you do get stronger pets. You get them allready at level 5 which is why ranger > druid early access. For instance your Boar becomes a barbarian at level 5 meaning it gets the rage ability.
Ok, relax.
If you want to be an archer and have a pet all you need to do is pick the archer style at level 2 (the game will ask you to chose a style at level 2) and the Best Master subclass at level 3 (the game will ask you to pick a Ranger subclass at level 3).
You're good, pet will always be helpfull. It's a very good choice actually.
Yes pets will grow with your character. Just go Ranger and choose Beastmaster at level 3. Then you can summon pets.
