Also: Ranger gets Gloomstalker subclass in 1.0 which (from what I have heard) has to slap hard. That being said: They even balanced the monk to feel good (which is supposed to be the most underwhelming class in 5e).
Yes they can dual wield.... but then so can pretty much any fighter or rogue with the right feats.
How good rangers are in this game, with larian having homebrewed so much, isn't fully known yet.
I seen ranger slaughter targets in seconds.
They are only weak because they dont have the area of effect spellcasters have.
Honestly it is like saying fighter is weak for not having an area of effect spell.
1: Are worse at martial combat than fighters (this includes bows)
2: Have a lot of features that are awkward, situational and do very little (favored enemy for example)
3: Have an extremely limited spell list that doesn't offset their gap in martial ability to fighters
They just have an identity crisis.
My current run is ranger, wyll, gale, and shadowheart.
I plan on bringing out Lae-lae when we go to see her Gith friends but otherwise I haven't had much of an issue with any of the fights.
Take colossus slayer. Make them a bounty hunter (for ea, gloomstocker for full game)
And have a finesse weapon for when you can't use your bow. Use ensnaring strike and Hunter's mark.
Colossus Slayer is pretty good
Multiattack Defense is very good
Volley is decent
Evasion and Uncanny dodge both are good
PHB beastmaster is a meme though. Gets a bit better with primal companion but still not that good.
Well I'm gonna be honest: I have never thought about playing a Ranger myself because (and please don't judge these as arguments, it's just how I felt it):
a) If I want to use a bow, why not play Rogue and make use of powerful sneak attacks?
b) Why use something like a summoned animal if you can play druid and become a bigger version of that animal?
As you said: Identity crisis ^^
But I bet that Larian will make the class at least useable and fun.
