Did you charge in anyway?
Indeed. BG3's early game does a good job of giving you helpful advice to succeed, while not holding your hand so tightly that failure would be impossible.
The intellect devourers die before they can reach you.
The game says this when you encounter the Intellect Devourers at the crash site.
It's basically telling you to play smart. So when the game says "One strike could be lethal." how do you avoid being attacked? You keep your distance and take them out from beyond the reach of their claws or force them to use up their action and then you kill them before they can retaliate.
Also you don't actually have to go through them. There are other ways to proceed that are relatively less dangerous, though not by much.
Nothing against OP but we'll have to brace ourselves for posts like this now that BG3 seems to gain in popularity.
______
@OP: Do you mean the first fight on the beach? Read your skills and use what you have available. Everything on the ship is easy-peasy tutorial, you need to apply a little bit more tactical thinking after that.
Yes but Swen
a) played an earlier version and
b) had like what? 4 critical misses?
Those two can be rough because the enemies in the tutorial area are deceptivly simple but intellect devourers are a perfect introduction because they can only harm you up close and they need one turn to get up your face.
So here's the general tip for Baldur's Gate 3 or just overall D&D: If you're warned, it's usually a good idea to heed said warning. If not, well, just like with dialogue choices, your actions will have consequences. Some of those consequences may be fatal.
