Baldur's Gate 3
What is the highest natural HP a character can have by lvl 12 without buffs?
I'm curious what you theorycraft lords can come up with.

Well, barbarians get a d12 of health, the highest in the game so it would have to be a pure barbarian.

Then there is the toughness feat, although I don't know if you would count that as a buff or not. It increases health 2 hp per level, which is the equivalent of 4 con.

If you make a barbarian with with 16 Constitution and give them the toughness feat would be getting 17 hp per level, so 17 multiplied by 12 is 204 HP.

May be a little less if the final game does averages instead of rolling for health.
20 con gold dwarf barb, tough feat

17+12*11+36= 185 hp

A level 12 Barbarian with 20 Constitution and the Tough feat can get a maximum of 228 health, if my math is correct. That's 144 health from max-hp barb for twelve levels, plus 60 from 20 constitution, plus 24 from Tough. Add in whichever dwarf subrace gets +1 hp per level, and you'd hit 240.

Without buffs, I think that's the highest you can get.
Level 12 Gold Dwarf Barbarian with 20 CON and the Tough feat will get you 185 HP, assuming average HP per level after 1st as Early Access does now.

Looks like we both went with the same build, but I didn't know if HP was being rolled or averaged.

Thinking about it, you might be able to get a little bit extra by dipping Dragon Sorcerer for the additional +1 HP per level on top which easily counterbalances the lost HP from the sorc hit die. But I don't think there's enough ASIs for that.

Averaged, at least in EA

Generally permanent progression things being rolled would be too save-scummy i imagine, and too hard to balance around. Imagine the party continuing to roll garbage hp, and simply not having enough by lategame, since it likely won't dynamically adjust encounters like a dm would

not very farfetched as many games do have dynamic difficulty, but it would be up to the devs to do so, and looking at the efficient side, if they are already trying to balance the game for each HP roll, then its easier to simply average it and have on setting of difficulty.
12(base) + (7*11 other levels) + 12 (dwarf) + (2*12 tough) + (5*12 con score) = 185 (give or take 5 HP depending on when you grab hag hair).

Wildheart - Bear should give you resistance to pretty much everything so effective health would be 370.

Gonna be hard to nail down anything specific before release since larion is changing some stuff from 5e, but "5e overpowered builds" on youtube is a good place to start
Be careful though, if you make a min maxxed character you will be mad when you miss because you expect to hit, but if you make a jank character you expect to miss and are happy when you land a hit

12(base) + (7*11 other levels) + 12 (dwarf) + (2*12 tough) + (3*4 before ASI) + (5*8 after ASI) = 177 (give or take 5 HP depending on when you grab hag hair).

Wildheart - Bear should give you resistance to pretty much everything so effective health would be 354.
ASI going to con retroactively raise HP from previous levels. Unless thats different in this game ig.

Thanks, didn't know that, I'll fix my math

I don't think the draconic +1 ho/level is applying to anything other than sorc levels.
basically Dwarf Barb, then Tough feature

You'd be correct, so never mind that. Straight Barb is the way to go.
