So looking at getting this when the full game releases
And I was curious if anyone can give advice or even links to videos to give advice for the game. I've played some DnD but I'm by no means experienced with it. I'm open for any advice but I'll probably do my first playthrough on easy to start though so hopefully it'll help me learn a bit too

Honestly, D&D and by extension, this game, is so expansive that it's hard giving just general advice. If you have specific questions, or would like resources, best ask for those :>

there are a ton of tips and tricks on youtube, that being said the game and 5E is meant to be super accessible, it has a bunch of tool tips and such, you really don't need any external sources to play.

If you buy it before it releases you get a free upgrade to the digital edition, so if you want anything from that I'd recommend buying it before release for the free upgrade.

If you go to the DND Beyond website you can look at all the rules and such.

This video is 3 years old, so probably outdated, but it does cover all the basis someone totally new to DnD might need to learn to play the game:

Honestly? If you have a question on the mechanics and how to use your actions or equip gear, there will be in game tutorials and tooltips for that.

After that it depends on how much you want to avoid/have spoilers.

Me? I've been dodging them actively and refuse to even go past a very early point in act one as of yet, because I want my first release play to be as spoiler free as possible.

If you're more asking how D&D5e rules work so you don't bork a build- there's and SRD (system reference document) that has all the basic rules available on the web. Just google " "5e D&D SRD"- it'll tell you all the stuff like about abillity scores, what classes are for and what they can do, different types of materials for weapons and armor (like silver/mithril/etc) and what they do mechanically, as well as how skills function.

Not all of it transfers 1:1 because videogames lose something in translation, and not all the options are in, but it's a good place to get a handle on the terms and what they mean to you as the player so you don't end up playing, for example, a barbarian with 8str and 17 int. (doable but I would not recommend)

do you and have fun brotha! anything works tbh just play and figure it out as you go its so rewarding that way.
Ok thanks if I get any specific questions I'll ask but can someone tell me a bit about the classes or at least a class I can create that lets me fight up front and cast spells if that exists? So far in regular dnd I've only made a barbarian so I only really understand the hit stuff hard part. And what's in the special edition if I order it before release?
Also might be a dumb question but I saw someone talking about how you can play as a premade character and stuff but is there still a completely unique character I can create that doesn't have a specific background like these premade characters. I'm sure there is as that is kinda the point of dnd most of the time but I'm just not sure. I tried playing the older baldurs gate games on my switch but the old rules of dnd made me super confused lol

I'd say the game in some ways is much more forgiving than actual DnD especially in terms of resting and what not.

My advice, is to avoid delving into multi classing just yet since that usually require some knowledge of a build.

Try to put more stats on things you are supposed to be good at (e.g. if you are sorcerer, put more stat on Charisma and ability checks that benefit it. Doesn't need to be 100% min max, you can have a lil bit of fun too). This alone would get you pretty far.

Hold ALT a lot while exploring to highlight items. if you loot and sell valuables, money shouldn't be an issue.

Since the game is using DnD 5th ed as the base, you can prob look up what each of those class does and work: what do they get and what class feature are special to them.
It might not translate 100% but it does give a good general idea.

And always do what your character background likely do. That's how you'd get inspiration points (with cap of 4). You can use them to re-roll particularly bad roll without save scumming.

i mean yea, the default custom character you make is unique to you and won't really have existing background story aside from the background "role" (e.g. acolyte, urchin, etc)

You can consider a Cleric or Paladin.
A cleric is usually more focused on healing and religion, but depend on the build it allows you to both tank and cast spells in the front line.

Paladin is similar with some difference in that they are usually more damage dealer focus.

i recommend reading this 2 article that showcase the basic of the class (not including the sub class feature)

https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric

https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/paladin

again, some things might not translate 100%, but should still give you a good general idea

If you'd specifically like to be a caster who's able to use melee you might want to look at Warlock (Pact of the Blade,) Larian's simplified things for them by making their melee attack rolls use the same ability score as their spellcasting (Charisma). You'll either need a feat or a racial bonus in order to use anything heavier than light armor, though.

There's also the Eldritch Knight subclass for Fighters. Fighter having the added advantage of being one of the easiest classes to understand. They will need either Strength or Dexterity depending on their choice of weapon, and Intelligence for their spellcasting.

Paladins are also technically melee+magic but maybe not in the way you're envisioning, their spells are mostly support/protective and they typically use a lot of their spell slots on Divine Smite to boost their melee damage. They usually use Strength-based weapons and their spellcasting is based off Charisma.

I would not recommend multiclassing if you don't consider yourself experienced.
