Some are divergent I think, because they're away from their colony. As far as I know, Illithids care about domination and find anything else weak and a waste of time. They're even suspicious of eachother I believe, because of the legend of the Adversary.

A mindflayer can still exhibit traits of their host, but these are to be stamped out and eradicated. These can be emotions and feelings, but also the host's hobbies (And personality traits of course)*.

They are made for sucking the brain out of humanoid species heads. That happens to be illithids idea of dinnertime.

And of course they understand feelings like love, loyalty and devotion. They regularly plant them into their thralls minds after all.

So yes, you can have that kind of relationship with a mindflayer too. It will be one-sided but you wont notice. It will also end prematurely but you wont mind that anymore at that point either.
