Questions from an old Baldur's Gate's Fan
Hello everyone,

Baldur's Gate 1 might have been one of my favorite games of all times.
I'd like to know a few things before deciding if I should get BG3 :

- I love playing Solo.
In BG1 I did the classic OP sorcerer playthrough, and the OP warrior / mage dual class.
As XP was shared between companions, being solo made my character Very powerfull, which I loved.
Is this possible in BG3, or is it the same leveling system as Divinity OS, aka no XP share?

- I understand the combat system is based on Divinity OS.
Do you still have the feeling of playing a Baldur's Gate game, while in combat?
For example, are some of the mage spells the same as BG1, or are they created for this game?

- Is there a workshop for this game?
Modding can make a game 100X times better.
If there currently isn't a workshop, will there be one?

- Will the price go up at release?
I'd like to watch reviews from people who have beaten a game, before deciding to buy it or not.
Will I be able to do so, without having to pay more than today?

Thanks for your time and have a great day :)

1: EXP is fully shared, even with companions that are staying at camp, so that you can actually swap companions in and out,

2: The combat system is slightly adapted 5e D&D. It has nothing in common with divinity other than general encounter design, meaning encounters are never "throwaway". They always have interesting things going on.

3: Nope, price will remain as it is. It's already a full price game.

It's based on D&D 5e rules. There are differences in spells from BG1.

It's turn-based more akin to tabletop D&D and likely WotC's intention by tapping Larian for this project. It will not have the feel of BG1, but it succeeds on its own merits for what it is.

The store page states which currency will not see a price change at release.

I'd say it feels like dos2 in combat since it has the same amount of freedom and encounter philosophy aka fights are rarely on flat ground there is a bunch of opportunities to get high ground or use the environment, but the spells all feel like DND since they are.

no price will stay the same. although if you buy now you get a free upgrade to deluxe edition.

You can play solo but expect more challenge.
EXP is shared by the party even if you leave them at camp.
Game is based on D&D 5e rules not Divinity OS.
It's turn based combat.
It has most of the D&D spells you know and love.
Price will not go up after release.

Thanks for your answers. :)

If there currently isn't a workshop, will there be one?

No workshop yet and I don't know if there will be one. But there are many mods on Nexus and I'm sure there will be many, many more after release.

There is already a decent modding community, and at full release, there will be many more.

modding support will be added later as confirmed by Larian, of course the doesn't mean they will give us steam workshop but it's highly unlikely it won't. Since they'll be giving us their Divinity Engine.

For 2: no, it will not feel like BG1 and BG2. If memory serves those were based on AD&D 2e adaptation, this is 5e which is quite different. Different rest rules, THAC0 is replaced by AC, a lot of other technical differences, too many to list. You will find some similarity and overlap, but it will not be the same. Also this is turn based, while originals were real time with a pause, so it will play differently.

Ah, so turn based instead of real time? That could work out to be much better because I remember some encounters in BG2 that got hectic fast and absolutely trying to control multiple characters, setting up spells like poison cloud only to have an ally get caught in it and then everything go south very quickly lol...good times.

No workshop, but there are already > 3 million downloads for it on Nexus, and that's just for the early access part of act 1. So, it's fair to expect lots of people interested in mods, and therefore many mods, and many of them making significant changes.

Also, this is my first experience with the 5e rules. It's a lot different than the 2nd and even the 3rd edition, but didn't take all that long to adjust to.

If you are here in these forums and you didn't know that it was a turn-based game, I'd suggest that you make a B-line for YouTube. Soak up some gameplay footage before you purchase it.

I would never purchase a game without knowing exactly what I was getting myself into.

Too risky. Especially for a game that requires as much patience as these turn-based, role-playing games do.

This video was released today. It's an entry-level video for beginners. Not saying that's your level of competence, but If you can make it through this, then you should watch a gameplay video next.

Before you buy.

Unless Larian opts to completely cripple their mod communities here, I have no doubt that they'll have a proper toolset available with the full release. With that said, though, they've never really supported the mod communities for DOS and DOS2, so those mod scenes were pretty dead compared to the Aurora and Infinity titles. With a proper toolset and real support, though, we should see a thriving mod scene here that continues for decades to come!

BG3's isn't much of a continuation of BG1 and BG2, more in lines with dos2 about.. well everything other than the ruleset. A lot is being left to be fixed by the modders as well.

You could purchase one day before release to get the free upgrade, don't play it until you have read reviews. If those reviews suck, refund it within the two week window.
