Why was this game called Baldur's Gate 3?
It has little to no relation to the previous two beloved rpgs.

Because calling it Baldur’s Gate 1 or 2 would have been confusing.

Because it has Baldur's Gate, This game should be called BG2 because BG2 was not a true sequel imo due to the lack of Baldur's Gate.

Here we go.

No relation lol. The main city is in both bg1 and bg3. Not to mention Minsc, Jaheira, and Voldo are in all three games.

RTwP complaint...

Because it’s going to be the third game in the series.

Because you still need to try the game
Well the original working title was stab stab magic pew pews, but they decided that they could give it a better name, after bouncing it around eternally they decided that the main town would be a good thing to call it, realized that it was already a title taken and added a 3 at the end, i mean if Final fantasy can get away with it why couldn't they? and thats how i met your mother!!!!

Serious answer real quick, I feel like people don't give the game any credit for thematic similarity to the classics.

BG1-2 were games where you came to terms with an initially unknown dark power that's taken hold of your life and set you on a path of violence and confusion, with significant story development happening the form of dreams as you come to terms with the power growing within you through the medium of your subconscious mixing with magical messaging. Upon waking, your acceptance or denial of this power would manifest in the form of unique abilities. You'd be joined by or opposed by individuals with that same dark influence, and your decisions with how to handle your own situation would inform how you dealt with them.

BG3 is a game where you come to terms with a mysterious dark power that's taken hold of your life and set you on a path of violence and confusion, with significant sotry development happening in the form of dreams as you come to terms with the power growing within you through the medium of your subconscious mixing with magical messaging. Upon waking, your acceptance or denial of this power can manifest in the form of unique abilities. You're joined by individuals in the same boat, and your decisions regarding how to handle your predicament inform how you interact with them.

This isn't a stretch, right? BG3 captures the theme of the journey that Baldur's Gate presented us decades ago, at least so far in act 1.

Because Wotc can do whatever they want with their properties! 🤪🍭 They're smartly cashing in with Larian,, & I'd do the same exact thing too.

"Personally I find it a little pathetic that 40 yo dudes can be so butthurt, that someone dared to use the sacred name of the game of their childhood.

It's just a game you played as a kid, not some holy artifact. Be happy that you can return to this world after 20 years where everyone lost hope for a sequel. Or forget about it and move on. Maybe your kid will like BG3, get interested in old Baldur's Gate and you'll have something to share. No need to defend the honor of Baldur's Gate name or something."

"What kind of blows my mind is that they refuse to accept that;

1.) Gaming conventions have evolved over 2 decades.

2.) DnD itself as a game has gone through 3 different iterations since BG2.

3.) Turn-based combat is a perfectly valid way to play an RPG.

4.) BG and BG2 are both at their core on-rails experiences, which is something they criticize BG3 for.

5.) The writing in BG and BG2 is inconsistent, sometimes corny or hilarious (which, again, is something they criticize BG3 for.)

6.) Absolutely nobody except them wants to return to the Infinity-engine formula." www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/kpu7wk/comment/gi467w2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

To ride the success of earlier baldurs gates titles and make more money that way. As you said its not supposed to pay homage to the previous games.

Its just meant to guarantee sales to an extent while doing what they want, regardless of what the IP is about.

That will be stupid to not use the rich lore which baldur gate provide if they are serious they have opportunity to make wonderful story and many more unique Quest and things which forgotten realms provide in general i hope they will not miss this chance and we should be happy that we are getting Baldur Gate 3 i don't know if not larian how many more years people will have to wait and not to mention even if some other company take this project there is big chance they will not able to do better job than larian i just don't want fantasy but high fantasy rich world with good history to it hopefully we will get it in early access there is not much but hopefully in full release we will see Baldur Gate 3 in its full glory can't wait to play it

Of course, I can't wait to play it either. Its just that Larian isn't building the game off of baldurs gate and the world it represents but instead turning it in to dos.

Story, characters, writing, atmosphere are all provided by dos and not forgotten realms.
