Maybe somebody more versed in DnD itemology can answer that better, but iirc there are items that give a +2 to a stat and increase the cap by +2 to compensate for it, making the stat possible to be 22.

Again, don't take my words as a conformation, I could be wrong and mistaking some homebrew item or something.

20 is the 'natural' cap barring magical items or specific capstone abilities.
From what I understand (it's been a long time since I played D&D) you cannot put ASI/feat points into your ability scores to raise them above 20, but you can raise it higher with items and consumables.

Barbarian

Primal Champion
At 20th level, you embody the power of the wilds. Your Strength and Constitution scores increase by 4. Your maximum for those scores is now 24.

20 is the normal cap, but stats can go higher than that with certain rare items and features that explicitly increase the cap. Remains to be seen how many of those will be in BG3.

30 is the hard cap, there's nothing in 5e higher than 30.

20 is the cap but there are items - typically “Belt of the XXX Giant” that allow higher.

And also Barbarians Capstone level 20 ability makes their con/Str 24 I think

Which we'll never see in BG3...without mods.

In 5E it is possible to go over 20, but only through magic items or divine gifts. 20 is the highest mortals can get naturally as the absolute peak of mortal ability.

Softcap - 20
Hardcap - 30
