Do unarmed strikes work with smite spells?

I'd really like to try a Zariel Tiefling Monk to use those extra smite spell they get to mess around with, but I plan on being FULLY unarmed and never using a weapon. Can anyone confirm if this is possible or if it specifically requires a melee weapon like actual D&D 5e does?

I had the same question so leveled one up. Doesn't work without a weapon, unfortunately.
