1) spell caster have 2 forms of spells - cantrips and spells
2) a cantrip can be used endlessly (same as firing a bow or making a melee attack), the cantrips vary between damage, control, support and other effects in and outside of battle
3) a spell uses a spell slot, if you have 4 level 1 spell slots and use a level 1 spell you now have 3/4 remaining
4) you earn a different number of spell slots for each level and as you level up you gain more of the higher level
onto some more advanced stuff
5) a spell can be cast at it's level OR higher (usually has greater effect but not all do). this means if you want to use a level 1 spell but have 0/4 slots left you can cast it as a level 2 spell instead.
6) Linking to number 5 - you CANNOT cast a spell at lower it's level.
OK so for the OG question, to replenish your spell slots you need to take a long rest - think of it as taking your pokemon to a PC and replenishing move PP
Warlocks are slightly different to other spell casters but follow very similar rules
There are spells. Spells have levels. This level is shown as a symbol like II III V VI etc.
Then you have spell slots. spell slots have levels.
In order to cast a spell, you must have a spell slot that is of the same level or higher in order to cast the spell. For example, you cannot cast a 6th level spell with a level 1 spell slot, because that spell slot is not strong enough for the powerful magic within a 6th level spell. But a 1st level spell can be cast with a 6th level spell slot, because a 6th level spell slot has plenty of magical power to let you cast that first level spell, and doing so, will upgrade the damage of your first level spell to a 6th level degree.
you will get your spellslots back on a long rest which requires camp supplies which are basically just food you find in the world or other items you come across, you can buy them from vendors too. There are other ways to get back your spell slots but those are individual abilities like Warlock Wizard and Sorcerer features.
I guess turning your caster into a god wouldn't affect story since you're still at the mercy of your rolls outside of combat. You just trivialize even the hardest battle because you can just spam your strongest spell. If you also get a mod to always win rolls, then you'd be screwing up your story. There's a LOT of story locked behind failed rolls. Save scumming and roll fixers miss so much because of that.
