You have to decide who lives and who dies.
However, there is one way.
1. Blow open the hole, and instantly hit the turn based mode to stop the cinematic triggering.
2. Attack Nere to start combat, and kill him.
3. All gnomes survive.
This appears to be incorrect of the current patch, specifically Meerna vanishes if you attack Nere before the scene triggers.
That abuse of game loop (plus you risk inviting some game breaking bug) and means you are already know what's coming. But from immersive, RPG point of view, you are going to watch gnome fly into lava, no matter what.
The Cutscene Triggers when You Talk to the Guy after blowing open the collapsed Tunnel.
If instead of Talking to him. You immediately Attack him with a Ranged Weapon or Magic. You can Save the Gnome.
I saved the Gnomes First.
Killed all the Duergars before opening the collapse.
That way they got a text of *we still need to save our friends*
Then after I killed they guy inside i could tell them to escape.
Little quirky
Killed every dwarf before clearing the rubble, talked to Laridda and got the powder, talked to the gnomes like three different times, tried letting Nere out first and tried attacking him immediately.
The only result is that Meerna just nopes out of existence as soon as you turn Nere hostile, or she gets yeeted into lava alive while your character just stands there completely unfazed with a snarky look. That's it.
Really wish this game would be more consistent with this crap, all these spells and dialogue abilities and solutions for stuff and you can't even save a single NPC from a scripted cutscene. Pretty weak for a game that everyone has been putting on a pedestal tbh.
