Highlighing Items
So, I started a game. Quickly figured out how to highlight "contatiners" aka dead bodies chest. But then I saw a pair of buckets with fish, I was like, surely you can't open them.. To my suprise you can and they contain camp supplies...

So my question is : Is there a setting to literally highlight all objects I can interact with ?

I can't find one either and seems like a massive oversight.

???

They are probably not included in higlighting because there is A LOT of boxes, sacks, simple chests scattered around. You would have the entire screen cowered in them.

But they usually don't contain anything other than some food or misc items like a hammer.
They can contain different stuff in hidden places, so you should look for them with your eyes and not rely only on the highlighting.,

Press Alt & hold.

That will highlight any item that you can pick up.

You have to read the whole post, not just the title of it.

I've been through the keybinds a few times and all I can find is ~ to highlight my characters and ALT to highlight the absolute most important thing,s and nothing to highlight the "very important but not quite as important' items.

If this at present isn't an opinion it should be, and quickly. Moving the pointer over the whole screen like a weird game of minesweeper isn't fun.

There is no game setting to highlight everything instead of just specific things like what it does, but there is a mod for it if you are open to using mods:

Cool find!

Question for folks. I've been modding other games for decades, but BG3 seems less friendly to it if my limited reading is correct. Is this game "drop mod in mod folder" friendly, or do you recommend a mod loader? And is there a stable mod loader? I never trust Nexus/Vortex to load mods, though I do use the site for manual DLs.

It depends on the mod. Some mods are as easy as dropping them in the mods folder and you're done, but other mods require a setup in a settings file. There is a mod loader named BG3 Mod Loader which will do that part automatically for you.

Some mods also need a 2nd mod to also be installed, which is named Full Release Mod Fixer. And other mods just get dropped into the game's data or bin directory.

In all cases though, the mods do tell you about which of the above, if any, you need. I have yet to see a mod on Nexus that doesn't spell it out for you on their description page.

Also worth mentioning that depending on what kind of installation the mod has, some also disable achievements. Unless you also use the mod that bypasses this and re-enables them.

So...uh...yeah, it's not as simplistic using mods for BG3 as some other games, but all of the above is still ridiculously easy. And everything I mentioned above is available at Nexusmods.

Since hotfixes are rolling out every other day I would not mod my game yet. Big chances of breaking stuff.

And highlighting everythign makes it an unintelligeble mess. There to much containers for that. You ignore those that do not highlight. They only contain minor stuff that just clogs up your inventory. Just stick to enemy armor and weapons and the obivous containers. It is easy to be filthy rich in this game. I have so much money it almost encumbers me.

no there is no way to highlight every item ALT will only show some.
but many many items holding alt will not show you only will find them when you mouse over them or spot them visualy
jennireneex Aug 10, 2023 @ 5:36am
ALT is finicky. To me it seems it catches the important things to loot. Things with quest objects or magic items. But yes, not everything - and yes sometimes I have found magic items in items that were not highlighted. Sometimes you have to be facing in the right direction for it to see things. Turn the character around and try it again will sometimes find items it missed.

I try to rationalize it as the game still wants you to do some work and actually explore and not just have the game hand hold. So I think of it as ALT is like you walking in to room and seeing things at first glance and what pops out to you as important. Then if you think there is something more you search harder and find the rest.

So much that is NOT important gets highlighted by alt, and yet many containers, some of which do contain good stuff, do not get highlighted. It honestly doesn't make a whole lot of sense how the game decides what to highlight and what not to, imo.

I do agree with the person above who said highlighting everything isn't the solution though, it is too much stuff highlighted at that point and it looks cluttered. I linked the mod that changes ALT to highlight everything, but I do not personally use it for that reason.

While I agree highlighting is confusing, I think it still makes sense. In a sense, if your character sees something something, a container or an object that looks interesting/valuable, it's highlighted, meaning it "piqued" your character's interest.

But I could be wrong. If this was explained better, then it would sure as hell make a lot more sense.

Although what the others said about highlighting only working when you're physically able to see the object, not exactly when it's in your "circle" of POV. If the thing is behind some tall boxes, you'll need to go behind said boxes to be able to "see" (highlight) it.

But I think there should be an option to highlight EVERYTHING, even if it breaks immersion. This is a non-competitve RPG anyways, so there isn't too much handholding.

Look, Im new to the game. I gave a very simple example where I saw and stood right next to buckets with fish and to my surprise I was able to open them and grab some camping supplies.

Same thing happened later where I saw barrels/crates on some wagon and I found out it's actually possible to open them. (Btw same crates later/before contained some junk or weapons) Idk how important supplies are. But I would assume that any container that is easy to access and open should be able to be seen by pressing ALT. Doesn't matter what type of loot is in it.

Both Diablo and PoE does it. I know they are different in terms of genre, but environmental looting is similar. I don't mean to simply any puzzles or secrets. Even if they explained somewhere what type of items/containers will be highlighted by ALT would be enough. Even a sentence like "Keep in mind many containers will not be highlighted as they contain camping supplies not necessary to finish the game"

Yeah that's what I said. There is a mod on Nexusmods that'll help you with your predicament, I hope it gives you what you need.

It doesn't help that Larian's game's contain ALOT of clutter.
