But they usually don't contain anything other than some food or misc items like a hammer.
They can contain different stuff in hidden places, so you should look for them with your eyes and not rely only on the highlighting.,
That will highlight any item that you can pick up.
If this at present isn't an opinion it should be, and quickly. Moving the pointer over the whole screen like a weird game of minesweeper isn't fun.

Cool find!
Question for folks. I've been modding other games for decades, but BG3 seems less friendly to it if my limited reading is correct. Is this game "drop mod in mod folder" friendly, or do you recommend a mod loader? And is there a stable mod loader? I never trust Nexus/Vortex to load mods, though I do use the site for manual DLs.
Some mods also need a 2nd mod to also be installed, which is named Full Release Mod Fixer. And other mods just get dropped into the game's data or bin directory.
In all cases though, the mods do tell you about which of the above, if any, you need. I have yet to see a mod on Nexus that doesn't spell it out for you on their description page.
Also worth mentioning that depending on what kind of installation the mod has, some also disable achievements. Unless you also use the mod that bypasses this and re-enables them.
So...uh...yeah, it's not as simplistic using mods for BG3 as some other games, but all of the above is still ridiculously easy. And everything I mentioned above is available at Nexusmods.
Since hotfixes are rolling out every other day I would not mod my game yet. Big chances of breaking stuff.
And highlighting everythign makes it an unintelligeble mess. There to much containers for that. You ignore those that do not highlight. They only contain minor stuff that just clogs up your inventory. Just stick to enemy armor and weapons and the obivous containers. It is easy to be filthy rich in this game. I have so much money it almost encumbers me.
no there is no way to highlight every item ALT will only show some.
but many many items holding alt will not show you only will find them when you mouse over them or spot them visualy
I try to rationalize it as the game still wants you to do some work and actually explore and not just have the game hand hold. So I think of it as ALT is like you walking in to room and seeing things at first glance and what pops out to you as important. Then if you think there is something more you search harder and find the rest.
I do agree with the person above who said highlighting everything isn't the solution though, it is too much stuff highlighted at that point and it looks cluttered. I linked the mod that changes ALT to highlight everything, but I do not personally use it for that reason.
But I could be wrong. If this was explained better, then it would sure as hell make a lot more sense.
Although what the others said about highlighting only working when you're physically able to see the object, not exactly when it's in your "circle" of POV. If the thing is behind some tall boxes, you'll need to go behind said boxes to be able to "see" (highlight) it.
But I think there should be an option to highlight EVERYTHING, even if it breaks immersion. This is a non-competitve RPG anyways, so there isn't too much handholding.
Same thing happened later where I saw barrels/crates on some wagon and I found out it's actually possible to open them. (Btw same crates later/before contained some junk or weapons) Idk how important supplies are. But I would assume that any container that is easy to access and open should be able to be seen by pressing ALT. Doesn't matter what type of loot is in it.
Both Diablo and PoE does it. I know they are different in terms of genre, but environmental looting is similar. I don't mean to simply any puzzles or secrets. Even if they explained somewhere what type of items/containers will be highlighted by ALT would be enough. Even a sentence like "Keep in mind many containers will not be highlighted as they contain camping supplies not necessary to finish the game"
It doesn't help that Larian's game's contain ALOT of clutter.
