Zhentarim hideout (possible) bug

I rescued Rugan and Olly, but intimidated them to leave the box to me. I went to the Zhent hideout (for the first time) where I was greeted by Zarys, but like 3 seconds later I get aggroed by them.
Like I wrote, it's the first time I went there, I didn't take the quest from Zarys. I just rescued those two on the road and went to their hideout. She welcomes me in, but it actually sounded a bit sarcastically, while Rugan is getting his ass kicked on the bottom level.

Is that a bug or was this intended as I didn't let Rugan take the box to their hideout? It's confusing as I've seen people claim that it's a bug and that I shouldn't get attacked

The bug seems to do with the chest shipment. I dropped the chest from my inventory into one of the boxes before they spot you and it seemed to fix the issue.

I had to:

* leave my main character at the door
* enter with companions only
* talk to Zarys

...and afterwards the main character could enter too.

Without spoiling anything, it really depends on how you got the chest from Rugan and whether you opened it or not. So, no, not a bug.

I am way past this already, the Zhentarim are no mroe haha. But I will keep this in mind for future runs cheers!

If anyone else is wondering, the problem was that I had a summoned Imp with me. Casting it away seemed to fix the instant agro even when I persuaded Rugan into giving me the chest. I managed to kill the Zhentariums and save Rugan, but he just runs off to nowhere and the quest auto fails regardless.

Hopefully I can still deliver the chest to Buldar's Gate and find Rugan later on, otherwise this would seem like one of the more sloppier quests out there.
