Switch Companions Faster?

Is there any faster way to switch other than dismiss through dialogue/hire through dialogue? I feel like even the first dragon age had this system nailed perfect?

Doesn't seem like it.

It seems like this option was provided as more of a role-playing option, rather than just a simple pit-stop where you "unplug" a character from your group and plug in a new one.

You see the characters react to being asked to just sit and wait in camp, which is obviously not a preference for most.

It's Larian adding that level of immersion and roleplay to that element, rather than just click-swap-click-done.
