In fact, a true heir of original Baldur's Gate both by mechanics and story-presentation is Pillars of Eternity. Baldur's Gate 3 have much more common with D:OS 2 than Baldur's Gate 1&2.
POE 2 was a fun game to play, but I don't think it is half as great as BG3. So you may either want to start with POE2 not to spoil the game, or go ahead and take the good stuff straight away. ::-)
Baldur's III is a better visual experience.
I enjoyed playing Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in turn-based mode, even though it wasn't intended to be played that way. I like Obsidian's writing better than Larian's, however, some of the writing and voice acting in Baldur's III is much better than their previous games.
For example, when you first meet Raphael, the devil. The lines of dialogue and voice acting are quite good for that scene.

POE2's my favourite of the 3. I think the systems are fun, the polish/QoL elements are fantastic, and the writing's phenomenal. The end of the main plot might be nothing special, but everything around it, including how companions/factions engage with it's fantastic. Graphically the models/presentation isn't going to compete with BG3 but I love the prerendered maps.
WotR probably has the most fun customisation of the 3 and some really fun ways in which your class/character choices interact with the story.
BG3's great so far, obviously a lot of polish. It feels like an AAA CRPG. At the same time I think it's pretty comparable to something like Skyrim with painstakingly made maps instead of an open world with hand crafted cities. Mechanically it's like Skyrim too where you're given immersive sim options in and out of combat. Even though the actual combat's less fun to me than the other 2, I don't love 5E, it has sim solutions the others don't from a focus on pushing, danger zones/explosives, and planning for fights. I will say it can feel pretty clunky if you're not super into individually arranging team mates for perfect ambushes as 90% of the time if you run into encounters your speaking character will be 10 meters in front whilst your other 3 party members will be on top of each other. Also for the love of god a game with so many traps/danger zones the game needs to either pause when they pop up so you just don't run into them or the AI needs to not directly run into exposed traps. Can make save scumming feel almost mandatory. It feels like a bigger more polished Original Sin tied to 5E for better and for worse with the most improved aspect being the writing and tying into to gameplay.
Oh, I'd also give NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer a shot if you haven't. It's more dated but it tells such an interesting story within DND and has a ridiculous amount of character options.
