It's one book. Do you kill people for stealing 1 book without giving them a chance to give it back or explain themselves?
Ridiculous.
obviously, i'm gonna reload. the guy saying "don't reload!" you're supposed to live with the consequences of your actions!". . yeah, no. hardly nobody plays CRPGs that way, you're in the minority, my friend.
Manual save 24/7 i do..
save early, save often.
then save again
then save 2 more times for good measure
then save another time, just in case. . .
then save one more time, just because.
2 hours without thinking of saving the game. Even people that don't save scum often have multiple save points for various key moments. First thing I did after entering the grove is sell stuff, rest, then save. Everything from that point I do in the grove as a back up point.
I'm at quicksave #1646. I'll probably be over 2000 by the time I finish the game.
If they are marked as "temporarily hostile" then you should be able to flee from combat and they then lose aggro.
You can escape the area and come back later.
Or knock out everyone instead.
They won't like it, but who cares.
Edit: You can often just accept jailtime too.
I don't know how you took this to mean, but when I read the word "accidentally" I tend to think the OP didn't actually mean to steal it.
