Can you leave the Underdark and finish open Act 1 quests?
As the title says. I accidentally found myself in the Underdark with my party just being lv 4 and while I can cope with the tasks and enemies in this new area I fear I might not able to return to the surface to solve all my unfinished act 1 quests being automatically pushed into act 2 at the end of the Underdark. I have also not yet visited the mountain pass on which I would prefer not to pass. So basically, can I work on all the open act 1 stuff after leaving Underdark?

Thanks for any help!

You can leave at any moment. You can even leave the underdark before finishing the act (there will be a big POINT OF NO RETURN style pop up as usual). The underdark is part of act 1, not the end of it. Even in act 2 you can go back to the act 1 areas. Be slightly warned that if you play with other people if anyone switches acts *everyone* switches and there's no warning or prompt. So like if you want to go back to the grove suddenly everyone's going with you. They can be on different maps within that act though still.

Underdark is still a part of act 1 with the exception of a certain elevator (which will lead you to act 2, but it gives out fair warnings) You'll have no issues exploring the wonders of the Underdark without fear of missing out on other act 1 quests.

Hahaha this is why i explore everything i can before moving forward... I accidentally stumbled upon the underdark and left and went back to exploring lol. thats the beauty of these kinda of games though for me. Getting lost and enjoying convos, finding hidden treasure, etc.

The problem I have is that my entry point was the Zent vine cellar and in the Underdark a magic field prevents me from taking that way back after I killed some Minotaurs there, and the second possible exit (Selunite castle outpost, an elevator) has a wall at the end which doesn't let me proceed.

So WHERE exactly can I leave the Underdark without ending act 1?

Security outpost exit goes to the goblin camp.

You can also use quick travel to go back out.

You go to your map and you can use waypoints to travel around as usual. Unlock a waypoint somewhere in the underdark for a quick way back. On the map look to the right side of the screen for a list of all your waypoints.

Oh my, Captain Obvious, haha...

Thanks for pointing me to the fast travel solution, guys and gals! As a role player though I would prefer walking out of that place on foot.

It quite literally explained to you how those things work when you found Gale stuck in one. Using it isn't really breaking role-play. You're in a magical world full of many weird things.. like how you have a parasite in your brain that entered through your eye and will eventually turn you into a rubbery-skinned squid person with a hive mind essentially.. but you find fast travel with magical runes on walls to be breaking your role-play? lol

At least it's better than games like Skyrim that you just click fast travel and it pops up a loading screen with the possible idea that you did walk all the way there. Here it actually has a lore reason of why it works how it does.

But do what you will and play how you will. That's the beauty of these games.

Don't mean to necro, but just wanted to say for the record that I've been playing through with "No Fast Travel" as one of my rules.
There are three ways out of the Underdark in act 1.
1: Zhentarim Elevator - Accessed and "unlocked" in the Zhentarim hideout.
2: Selunite Fortress Ladder - The stone wall must be opened from the surface side.
3: Auntie Ethel's mushroom circles - You must have a mask to walk through the secret door.

If you chose to enter the Underdark by using feather fall and jumping down the big hole in the spider caves like I did... There's literally no way out of the Underdark without fast travel unless you progress to act 2. Well, that rule's getting broken quick.

So I went the feather fall route when first entering the Underdark and I was for sure able to get back above ground through a portal behind Auntie Ethan’s home, using no mask or any of that. I don’t recall where this portal was in the Underdark though.

I've since discovered that the mushroom circle located through the first layer of illusion will - for the first time only - teleport you to the surface behind Auntie Ethel's cottage. For whatever reason, when I played - this did not occur. However in subsequent testing this has been the case each time.

:o

I totally missed this. Does this have anything to do with the single button near one of the treasure gates that seems to do absolutely nothing?

Spoiler: There's an illusory wall in the Zhentarim's hideout, close to where a wolf stands guard. Using speak with animals is actually one of the hints that helps initial discovery.
