Joining multiplayer games
Just starting for 1st time. If I make a public multiplayer game and start it by myself, can people join it later?

Not only can they join it, once they do, their character will be stuck in your party forever. You can't remove them even by killing them. Once 3 different people have added a character to your game, no one else can ever join it again, and you can never have one of the NPCs in your party ever again.

AKA Don't make a public game... everl.

I wish I was lying. Google it. It's widely reported.

How do I change it from public to friends only?

ye, apparently people said its an intended feature as you're supposed to play on that specific save with the same group of people throughout, like you'd do with the actual tabletop game itself I imagine?

Don't really know, atleast that's what I heard some people say that it is set up like this for that reason. If anyone knows better, feel free to correct me though.

It's in the options menu somewhere. I'm not logged in right now so I can't check.

Should I just play single player then? I have some friends playing but they're higher level now.

One of the problems is that you miss out on some story, as some things only happen when certain characters are in the party. If you have 4 customs in your party, you miss out on a lot of content. And if you have more than 3 people you like to game with now and then, too bad. Only the first 3 to join can ever play in that save with you.

you can do it at any time via esc -> session -> session settings (top right corner cog i think)

Anyone joining you makes a brand new custom character that gets bumped to whatever level you are. The issue is, after they log off, their character remains. This can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. They should have at least let us send them to camp.

indeed! There is so much dialogue I'd miss if I would be stuck with just customs and not origin characters... Like, for such a story driven game and with its rich characters this... "feature"... is anything but game-breaking.

What about joining other peoples games? Do you use your single player character or you have to make another?

You have to make a new one. So you will get bumped to their level, but you will have starter gear. Not ideal. Ask them to save a set of gear for you.
