Also, yes, certain npc can respec you.
You can respec in camp for 100 gold. You can farm 100 gold pretty fast.
You can change classes after doing a certain quest pretty early in the game, so don't worry about being locked into anything, just experiment.
And yes: it's fun. I enjoyed it a lot.
And you can respec for 100 gold easily once you find a certain NPC (found rather early if you do some searching in the beginning area)
Fighters have some useful stuff early on, but they only really open up at level 3. Taking a Battlemaster subclass gets you options from a list of Maneuvers that can have strong impacts on a fight. Eldritch Knight isn't anywhere close to as powerful as a real spellcaster, but access to utility spells (i.e. featherfall or fog cloud) makes a huge difference in the right moment.
If you decide the fighter is not for you then you can always try barbarian, there kind of similar but barbarians don't wear have armor naturally. This is also before we talk about fighters and barbarians sub classes.
Lae'Zel is already a fighter class, so, give her a try while granting your main character a different class.
