Necromancy of Thay Disappeared

Not sure what happened, I picked up the book a while back, but it is no longer in my inventory. The quest gives me two options: finding some way to open it; or destroying the book. Anyone know how to fix this?

check your companions inventories (check Astarion if he's in camp and not in your party first). But also use the search function, maybe placed it somewhere and forgot? I get so lost when I open my mule's inventory (21 str can carry a lot!)

Thank you for telling me to check inventories. I don't know why when I press Drop the book it puts it in my own inventory.

I put the Necromancy of Thay book in a container (Wooden Crate) and it would not let me take it out of the crate. I put a sword and another "normal" book into the crate and I could remove them easily, but not the Thay book. I put the sword and book back into the crate and threw it a distance to break it. The crate broke and the sword and normal book were there - but the Thay book was gone. I did this "in camp" and left camp later. The book is nowhere to be found on any PC or NPC, but the quest is still unresolved. I'm pretty sure it is bugged and without the book, it will never be resolved... neither the bug or the quest.

I lost the book after i went to prisson in baldurs gate

For me it also disappeared. The weird thing is, it is even gone now in ALL of my savegames. So this definitely seems to be some kind of bug.

i checked it and it definitely disappears after you go to prison in wyrms rock, they take it away with your belongings and it is not in the chest after you escape

Seems like I've been struck with this as well, on Honor Mode no less so it's not like I can reload an old save. Didn't notice until I got the codex and went to finish the book, but it's just... gone. Checked all my companions, checked stash, even went back to the prison to look around and notta.
