Do I need to check every basket, vase, crate, bookshelf, etc. ?
I'm like 8 hours into the game but haven't even reached the Goblin Camp in Act 1 yet because I spend so much time opening every single basket, vase, bottle_rack, crate, bookshelf, etc etc etc.

I'm not looting everything inside of them, but I'm checking them just in case there is ever something important or very valuable, which seems to occasionally be the case.
Like maybe I find a book that gives me a dialogue option later, or I find a key inside of one of these things, or the food I need for a long rest, or rare alchemy ingredients.

So when I enter a room that is full of these containers I feel really down, knowing that I have a boring 5+ minutes of opening everything.

Does anyone know if it is worth it for me to continue checking everything? I don't want to miss out on interesting stuff, but I'd be super happy to skip over just sifting through hoards of common items.

Are there specific objects I should always check, like treasure chests?

Should I still read every book?

It would also be awesome if the game had some sort of button I could press on mouse and keyboard to view the contents of all containers in a radius around me. Instead of 5+ minutes of opening each container one at a time, I could spend 30 seconds checking groups of containers all at once.

.

Any advice is appreciated.
(Again I'm not picking up every thing. I'm just trying to avoid missing out on stuff from assuming there's just more common items in a container when in reality there was something I would want in there)

Thanks!

there is: left ALT (edit: it'll highlight them, not show you the contents)

Most things worth looking at are either well signposted or found through a check simply by coming into close proximity.

If you didn't know already, none of the loot in this game is generated randomly. This means that you are most likely to find good loot in a place where it will make sense. You probably won't find the best greatsword hiding in a wicker basket, and if you do it means a developer made the sly decision of handplacing it there.

No. More likely what you will find is a surplus of camp supplies, and vendor trash if you have the patience.

This

Don't worry about hitting every box and barrel, unless you're in need of camp supplies.

If you're good on supplies, you may only miss some secret easter egg items, there are a lot of magic items just laying on tables and I havent found anything too special in barrels. I've found and those items laying out in the open are plenty to become well equipped.

I also suffer from really bad FOMO and want to find those special secret things (if they even exist, but I'm pretty confident based of Larian's other games), so I've been checking EVERYTHING and there really isnt a whole lot, but I do have a nice chunk of change from selling all the junk.

One massive tip is just to pay good attention to the mini map, cause it'll show you tiny paths you can take to secrets or places you're able to jump to. or even just a room you might have missed.

This is not true. I have run through the tutorial area a few times and the chest in the starting room (to the left if you havent rotated the camera) has had different items every time I've opened it. I assume that has been true for others, but I've opened that one frequently and it has changed every time. Also true for the already deceased bodies in the helm.

Some things are set for sure, but not all things.

I would really like for Alt to show me everything that I can interact with or at least have a setting so that people who like it in its current form can leave it, but people who want to open every box and barrel can do so without FOMO.

Also, there have been times where my character passed a perception check, but I apparently didn't and I can't find whatever it is that the character is so excited about. If Alt were more comprehensive, I feel that this would not be an issue.

If you are a loot goblin like me you do. It's also really worth it sometimes. You won't miss anything important I don't think.

You sound like a loot Goblin too.

Yeah it is worth it because you get a lot of lore, information, and even some quest updates.

Early on I grab everything to sell later. Once I have all the gold I want, I am more selective. But you can always 'send to camp' items so you are not encumbered. Then grab them once you can sell things.

To amend my statement: I am not talking about things that are explicitly hidden behind checks. Those should not show up unless I've passed the check, but then Alt should highlight them like normal. I am talking about more mundane items that may or may not hold loot. I don't like that someone else has decided it is not important enough to show up when pressing Alt. If it isn't important, then just make it set dressing that I can't click on, but if I can interact with it, I don't want to have to spend 2 minutes on each screen hunting for the magic pixels.
