The key here is that hide becomes a bonus action for you. Which means you can move into position .. murder someone .. move out of line of sight of the others and then bonus action hide. All in one turn. And because attacking from stealth gives advantage this means you are constantly using your sneak attacks. And REMEMBER ranged can sneak attack too. So you don't HAVE to eb right next to someone.
Assassin is also great because it means you can plan every combat around your rogue shanking someone to start it off. You just drag your rogue into a solo group and then set the party up ready to leap into combat from stealth but not actually in it yet. Then you annihilate some fool with your assassin strike. And hey .. combat started. So you get all your actions back! So if they survived the initial stablest odds are they won't survive more.
And after you do that then you bring in the other characters. Hopefully rogues target has died so they can now break LOS and hide.
In short .. Rogues are amazing. But as you've probably noticed there's plenty of ways to play them wrong.
Don't listen to the martial supremacists. You didn't ASK to be told to switch to martial. You ASKED to be told how to make rogue viable. And the simple answer is .. It's viable. But you really need to play them right. And it might not be obvious how you're meant to do that.
You could stay as rogue after that point if you still wanted to play the class. Though you might want to take ranger to 4 or else you'll only get 2 feats instead of three.
You have to find a certain NPC (Lich Guy) and he will let you create your Character stats from scratch again(no changes possible to appearance and race tho).
You get to choose your starting Class, can spend your Ability Points again and then are able to decide level for level what you want.
For your Rogue, most likely you'll want to go a very high Dex (16/17) to start with and you can and should expand on that when you get ability score increases.
Other than that, you should invest a bit in Con for HP and Cha to be able to talk yourself through some situations. But your absolute Main Stat is Dexterity. It is your main attack, damage and ability modifier and adds to your armor class.
At level 3 you'll get to choose a subclass. And imo you should either go for Thief or Assassin. Arcane Trickster is... a different kind of playstyle which needs a bit more thinkthrough and is for more expierenced players to make it work. It can feel a bit unsatisfying if not done right.
Assassin is your 1st Round burst Rogue which will eliminate targets super fast in 1st round because he gets tons of damage through crits if you surprise your enemies. But is a more or less "normal" rogue after that.
Thief is a very constant boost to everything you do. Main thing here is the 2nd bonus action you get every turn, which you can use to hide, sprint or do an extra offhand attack, which makes it a really good pair with 2 hand crossbows.
Hope that helps a bit.
10 str, 16 dex, 14 con, int 8, wis 16, cha 8 is recommended
You go 17 dex and 16 on level 1, other stats don't matter.
On level 3 pick the thief subclass that gives you the second bonus action
On level 4 pick the moderately armored feat with a +1 to dex
Get the Speedy Lightfeet boots
Now you are all set:
You dash and get 3 lightning charges and then you can either backstab or attack normally.
Great mobility, awesome damage.
