There's 3 acts. Act 1's end is a little confusing because it has two points of no return before it actually ends.

The game will outright tell you "finish any business you have before proceeding."

A good indicative I believe is that Steam will give you an achievement when you finish Act 1.

You have two paths to act 2. There is a 'soft' point of no return when you do one of two things: Leave the wilderness via the mountain pass and head towards the creche, or, leave the underdark via boat to Grymforge. The game will tell you to wrap up anything but you can safely ignore that as there is another 'hard' point of no return that occurs either when you finish Grymforge or finish the Creche and head to Moonrise towers. You can safely do all of these locations without fear of missing anything. I did the creche first then went and did underdark+Grymforge. This left me with a nicely leveled party with a ton of great gear heading into Act 2.
