Is there a downside to resting often?
I am doing my first play through of BG3 and honestly the resting system has me a touch confused. I cleared the dungeon with the skeleton for the camp. , then I Went to the first settlement and did some stuff and got the goblin quest . I had not yet done any long rests. I did my first long rest and the narrative at the camp felt way far ahead of the story. I then did a full restart and am resting like a maniac. The narrative certainly makes a lot more sense this way.

I was wandering if there are any downsides to resting tons of times, especially if I decide not to spend any supplies. The story lends a feeling of being urgent, but the way camp stuff is structured makes it seem like you should take your sweet time and rest for a narratively unrealistic amount of time.

I think short rests are fine. Long rests can progress serten stories, for a example Lae'Zel will be gone f you took a long rest before freeing her from the Thieflings.

Ahh, what counts as a short rest? Is it the short rest button or doing a long rest without supplies? I rather like the story but it seems like the camp system and story pacing are asking for the exact opposite sort of behavior.

A short rest is the when you click the short rest button, all it does is regain HP for your party and making certain spells and abilities available again. Long rest is when you sleep at the camp, with or without supplies.

I've had no negative effect of resting often, other than it consumes supplies. So always pick up those camp supplies, even if you have a lot now you'll run into areas later where they are scarcer.

What happens if you long rest without consuming supplies? I thought you had to consume supplies to get the full benefits of long rest.

Perfect, thanks for the advice. I mostly want to rest often to advance the story related content at camp. I probably will just rest without using supplies for most of my long rests. It wont restore as much, but then again I don't need it to.

Yeah, you do but you can do it with 0 supplies it just wont really do anything but restore 50% hp or something. But it will trigger camp dialog.

I took a long rest without supplies and she was still around. It might be caused by triggering other story related stuff before getting her. I suppose it kinda falls into the "problem you want to have" category. I imagine BG3 is going to have something new for you for multiple runs if you do stuff differently.

The second time going through the starting areas is much faster. It probably would take you much less time to get back to where you are. You could also just ride it out and see where the story takes you. I restarted because the camp scenes were really out of sync and shattered the immersion. I honestly don't regret it, things are much clearer now with the additional context. Before the camp was acting like days had past when in fact it was the same day as the crash.

Afaik certain timed quests may fail if you don't finish them at the current day (before a long rest).

I don't know if you can miss Lae'Zel if you do a LR before rescueing her (I didn't rest before In reached the Tiefling camp and even then it was only a short rest) and I'm not aware of quests that may get lost before accepting them if you do LRs more frequently.

Right now I'm about to give my group the first LR in a while (right after defeating the Goblins at the Tiefling camp gate), but may also do some quests in the camp first before resting. I definitely won't go to the goblin camp without a rest 'though.

I just had to roll back about an hour of progress because I showed up to an event and found an NPC just straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dead in an area that looks like it should have more and it did.
