Gale permanently left?
Gale wanted a magic item. I said I'd give him one, but when I looked at what was available I X'd out of that box. Then Gale said something snarky and left. A message came up that he permanently left the party.

I'm still not through the goblin camp yet, so there's a ways to go. My last save with Gale was before a big fight that I don't want to go through again.

Looking online, it appears that Gale is the only true wizard in the game, which seems odd. If this is the case, I won't have a wizard for the entire game,

Is it worth it to re-do that fight so I can get Gale back?
Is it unusual that he would just up and leave on me like this?

If you're that desperate for a Wizard and don't want to reload your earlier save, you can recruit a wizard hireling for 100g from Withers
There are lore reasons why he won't stick around if he can't get magic items, but if you do insist on having him around you can re-load a save. As Daryl said though, you can eventually just get a hireling as an alternative. I keep Gale around though because he's a fun addition.

He's the only wizard "companion" in the game with a storyline and personality.
If you just want a wizard for combat and slinging magic, Daryl is right.

You can talk to Withers in your camp and give him 100 gp and buy the services of one.

Reload from before and dump him in your camp so that he can't stop you while you are exploring. This should buy you extra time to find something that you don't mind parting with.

Alot of the items you can feed him are BARELY better than mundane non-magical items.

So feed the poor buy.

Though I agree that item menu interface for feeding him is BADLY implemented. It's easy to end up giving him the wrong item...or no item at all in your case.

It's not a matter of not wanting to feed him. Just that when the window came up I decided to see if the other companions had something less important. Turns out I didn't need to do this, but I didn't know that at the time.

I have the same problem. I spoke to him to offer him a magical item which was in HIS inventory. The game wouldn't let me use that one, he wanted one of the two items I had equipped on two of my other characters. So I tried to exit and move the magical item to my inventory hoping it would then let me use it. No dice, he got mad and left. Shame, I actually liked Gale apart from the fact he likes to eat magical items like they are candy, which is a pain in my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Respec Astarion to a wizard or sorceror. You don't need a rogue in the party anyway if were honest, not with Shadowheart standing right there with all the same skills + cleric spells.

I keep failing to understand why people keep having a problem with this. Just give him SOMETHING! There are magical items in act 1 that aren't equipment you can give him, there's PLENTY of basic green items you can ALSO give him, which wasn't something you could do in early access.

People have SO many options to work with Gale's problem during act 1 and I just continue to see people obsessed with their items like a greedy goblin over helping a friend and companion character in an rpg. It's so weird to feel like I'M the weirdo for outright giving him a green ring or other item because I give a **** about him as a character over a low tier magical item, something the game is FULL of.

Is the game full of crappy magical items sure, but one Gale can't eat any old magic item it has to be the ones that specifically say he can eat them.

Second while there may be a lot of said items in the game that doesn't mean that there are a lot of crappy ones in/on the party members. The interface for giving him magic items is ♥♥♥♥.

And if you fail to give him one when the interface opens up, like say because i dont want to give him the rare helm that is on a character that desperately needs movement increases, he immediately dips out.

I don't agree with people that won't give him anything because they want to keep everything but the idea that people are being greedy goblins because they dont want to give up extremely useful items especially early on is not absurd. Although admittedly in my play through Gale spends most of his time in camp. I'm a wizard.

And we won't even get into that in multiplayer it has to be an item that is equipped not just in your inventory. Which is truly absurd.

And like in my multiplayer run he just got something. we long rest and he wants something again... ridiculous

fROM NOW on have like at least 10 quicksave and auto save slots, and just quick save often. I do this for if I accidentally do something

"nooooOOOOOooooo my vendor trash green ring that I could sell for like 40 gold or that'd otherwise collect dust in my stash, whatever shall I do! I can't part with something so prEcious! >>>>:(((("

Just feed him your good stuff. Your "good stuff" is trash anyway, or will become trash in 20 minutes.

Oh good job. Please take my ring of Color Spray. Spray all that color into your mouth as you eat it.

Surely you had a recent auto save before that happened.
