If you just want a wizard for combat and slinging magic, Daryl is right.
You can talk to Withers in your camp and give him 100 gp and buy the services of one.
So feed the poor buy.
Though I agree that item menu interface for feeding him is BADLY implemented. It's easy to end up giving him the wrong item...or no item at all in your case.
It's not a matter of not wanting to feed him. Just that when the window came up I decided to see if the other companions had something less important. Turns out I didn't need to do this, but I didn't know that at the time.
People have SO many options to work with Gale's problem during act 1 and I just continue to see people obsessed with their items like a greedy goblin over helping a friend and companion character in an rpg. It's so weird to feel like I'M the weirdo for outright giving him a green ring or other item because I give a **** about him as a character over a low tier magical item, something the game is FULL of.
Second while there may be a lot of said items in the game that doesn't mean that there are a lot of crappy ones in/on the party members. The interface for giving him magic items is ♥♥♥♥.
And if you fail to give him one when the interface opens up, like say because i dont want to give him the rare helm that is on a character that desperately needs movement increases, he immediately dips out.
I don't agree with people that won't give him anything because they want to keep everything but the idea that people are being greedy goblins because they dont want to give up extremely useful items especially early on is not absurd. Although admittedly in my play through Gale spends most of his time in camp. I'm a wizard.
And we won't even get into that in multiplayer it has to be an item that is equipped not just in your inventory. Which is truly absurd.
And like in my multiplayer run he just got something. we long rest and he wants something again... ridiculous
Oh good job. Please take my ring of Color Spray. Spray all that color into your mouth as you eat it.
