Versatile weapons by design are supposed to give you the *option* whether to 1h or 2h. You're talking about Dual Wielding, the OP is talking about the Duelling Fighting Style Swords Bards get access to, which relies on one-handing a weapon.

it makes plenty of sense if you're a monk that wants to scale dex instead of str. 2h staff screws up the calculation because the game defines "monk weapon" as any proficient weapon that's not 2h. ergo, versatile = borked
My paladin wielding a longsword gets the +2 damage bonus as long as he's wearing a shield in the other hand.
The description for Dueling is still a little awkward but I'm guessing it doesn't mean "it can't be Versatile ever" and is supposed to mean "can't be a versatile weapon held in two hands".
