Sorcerer: staff or scimitar
Stupid question, but I just started. My sorcerer has a staff with 0-7 damage. Killing the imps at the start of the game gave me a scimitar with 2-7 damage...I get a "!" icon that I am not proficient with this weapon, but he still equips it...which weapon is better? Do I need the staff to cast spells?

You shouldnt be using the staff to melee unless you have no other choice.

Use the cantrips you got since these are free cast(cost 1 action but no spell slots) to deal dmg.
The correctest answer is Twinned Cast Chromatic Orbs!

But you'll probably get more out of the magical effects of staves.

In your character screen you’ll see a “Proficiency bonus” of +2

Basically anything you’re proficient in gets that bonus, and it increases as you level.

So skills you’re proficient in get +2.
WEAPONS you’re proficient in get +Attack.

So if you compare the chance to hit with the weapons, you’ll notice the staff is higher.

Armor will prevent you from casting if you’re not proficient.
