Use the cantrips you got since these are free cast(cost 1 action but no spell slots) to deal dmg.
But you'll probably get more out of the magical effects of staves.
Basically anything you’re proficient in gets that bonus, and it increases as you level.
So skills you’re proficient in get +2.
WEAPONS you’re proficient in get +Attack.
So if you compare the chance to hit with the weapons, you’ll notice the staff is higher.
Armor will prevent you from casting if you’re not proficient.
