Max party size?
Just a quick question, during the opening act our party of 4 had someone able to pick up a NPC follower to control (4 custom characters and I think we picked up the grinch woman as a follower, so we had 4 players + 1 NPC in party)

A few fights later she left the party, now every potential follower says the party's already full and refuses to join and goes to the camp instead, where they also refuse to join.

Can someone tell me what the actual (vanilla) caps are on both player party members and eventual NPC followers, and/or how to convince the damn grinch woman and other Origin NPCs to follow one of us?

4 is such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ choice by Larian. So glad it can be modded out eventually.
You can have a party of 4 characters who can then have temporary followers that you can control. These can be either quest NPCs or summoned familiars or the like. I've not seen any real cap on those as you can have 6 spider friends after throwing a spider egg "grenade".

4 is what the game is balanced around, so I would hope the mods that give you a bigger party also increase the number of enemies by 25% per extra party slot.

See now you're implying we can go over 4 fully-fledged characters to control. But I assume that, like Divinity 2, those are just summons that last for x combat turns

They don't and they shouldn't.

We will see. I'm pretty sure modders will fix that too. They were able to remove the 4 party limit for D: OS 2, so this should be no big problem.

Some are, some are more permanent.
The Summon Familiar spell summons a familiar that will stick with you until you either dismiss it or it dies. Same with ranger's Animal Companion.
You can also get a few special summons that don't care about your class through quests or story.
And sometimes an NPC will tag along for the duration of their quest or you leave the area.

Just play on Story then, that way you'll have the easy fights without mods.

Don't shame people for wanting an easier playthrough, it can be hard to get 6 people together for many evenings on end to finish a game like this without turning 1 fight into an entire evening.
Some people just want story mode

Nah, I'll play on Normal. Cope and seethe.

You replied to the wrong person. I wasn't shaming anyone while the person I replied to is.
When I said they don't and shouldn't, I was referring to his asinine demand of increasing number of enemies.

I guess. The combat encounters are built around a 4 man squad though so adding anymore with mods is gonna kill any difficulty.

My mistake indeed, I was chiming in on this
