This isn't accurate. You can find potions, scrolls and money in non-marked containers. Also camp supplies. You don't have to take these things but you will miss out on them if you aren't more careful. There is no external marker that says where the "good stuff" is.
You are forced to to so, if you play with min-maxing in mind, which I usually do in these games.
This is not about hand-holding either, it is about the game respecting my time.
As someone else pointed out, the clutter being there draws an amount of attention, even if you ignore it in the end.

I like that the merchants have limited amounts of gold. It's just realistic.
