Bard performance skill check?
No Spoilers please, I am most of the way through ACT 1.

Playing a Paladin/Bard.

When I start playing a song and people come over to watch it will roll a performance check but I have no idea what it does. Then subsequently if I play again nobody comes over and no performance check. Just curious what is intended to be going on here or if I am missing something.

Possibly a performance check to see if they give you money?

Yeah, i think it's just to see if they'll toss you some coins.

Even with the performance check failing, they'll still cluster around and shout encouragement until you stop :)

It does give you money but you have to pick it up from the ground

At act3 they started tossing some coins, before, I can't remember.

so, im not sure what the deal is. After posting this I simply find sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Like sometimes nobody gathers and no performance check.

It almost seems time related. Like you have to long rest and come back or go to a new crowd?

Not sure....

The first time you play for a crowd you would do a performance check to see if they'll give you money or not, but the second time you do it they won't care.

People that have listened once won't do so again until a long rest.

Not sure.. I have a +5 perform and +5 charisma and I fail... every... single.. time. I wish they'd show me the target and the dice roll.. it's likely a bloody 20 or higher or something and I'm wasting my time.
Wearing me out.

Uncheck "carmic dices" in the game settings. Nobody knows how it works but it's default setting. Without it you should have normal random generator I believe.

I can confirm that it possible from early in Act 1. You don't even need to be a Bard. If one of your team members helped Alfira with her song by playing along, they'll be able to play instruments afterwards.
Works in Emerald Grove and even in your own Camp, the NPCs or currently not recruited companions just have to be near enough to hear you. Seems to be a bit buggy for me and does not always work, but if you are near a Bard NPC, you will perform together. Anyway, should work at any place with non-hostile NPCs.
No idea how high or low the passive check is, but chance seems to be low with a +2 bonus, a bit more than 50/50 with something between +4 and +5 and close to failproof with added advantage. At least in Act 1.

You can open up the log and see what you rolled. I noticed that the DC of the check changes and suspect that it has to do with the size of the audience, but I didn't experiment to see if that was the case. You could try performing for a smaller crowd to see if you succeed more often.

In the original version of the Alfira Joins the Party mod, party members would sometimes wander over to where Alfira was playing music by her tent and start dropping coins near her.

Unfortunastely, they "fixed" this in later patches. It's a shame, this is behavior I wish they had left in the mod. The various folks in your party listening to her play with rapt attention, sometimes even dropping coins near her. (Curiously, somehow they can do this, even though Tav has all the party gold!)

all the bard music is good for is a distraction, like in a market /street / big room area with tons of NPC, you can get them ALL focuses on one corner and strip the place clean with a rogue, then walk away while they are all still dancing. And there are not many places this is too handy, but act 2 vendor area of moonrise there is a +3 shield and some other blue quality magic items easily grabbed after a distraction. Or act 1, you can get in the barrelmancy room by distracting roah's crew, etc. It can also cluster people up for a fireball or other 'combat starter' before they realize you are not playing nice.
