You can have your opinion, but I disagree entirely.
Games that are not live service AAA and don't have lootboxes or loads of MTX do not sell this many copies just because of those two differences.
And DOS2 released a long time ago. People want the new game, and there has been 3 years of early access here, if this was a mediocre game or a dumpster fire people would have been aware of that for a long time now.
This is a popular title based on it's own merits.
Try thinking of the battlefield like a chess board rather than a boxing ring. If you just trade blows with enemies then yes its all reduced to what you and they roll.
However if you take actions that enable you to damage the enemy but they haveto waste some turns just getting within striking range, that makes a huge difference.
Can you use height advantage to get better rolls?
Can you shove enemies off places so they take extra damage, or land prone and haveto waste a turn on just getting up and not being able to reach anyone to attack?
Can you engage a group of enemies from some advantageous angle so you get a round or two of just fighting half of them? Can you perhaps single out someone in a group and take out a guard first? Can you lure a group of enemies into a chokepoint?
Spot on.
This game has so many bad design decisions ,anti quality of life features and rushed, mediocre writing that whenever I see people giving it this wild, overblown praise I can't help but think that their hype wagon came with no windows to look outside.
I like it, but for me its enjoyment value is at about 50% off current price.
DOS was also famous for how terrible its RPG mechanics were... Both DOS and D&D 5e have less character customization and tactical depth than checkers or tic-tac-toe...
You should try Pathfinder.
Then you might have a glimpse into what "options" can actually look like.
Finished those a long long time ago (I think I played every proper western RPG or close to it). There are differences though. They are more management and powerplay since you are more a god (especially the seond one). But BG3 offers me a lot more fun in the combat. I could not yeet enemies across the entire battlefields or make buildings come down on enemies or have so much fun in conversations).
I don't really tend to favour games, I appreciate them for what they are. Something more people should do.
No, it's not overrated.
You don't like it, uninstall it.
End.
Edit: Personally I've enjoyed the game a great deal but the amount of jank in targeting, movement and UI is pretty nuts. I don't remember DOS2 having as many issues with those.
