Well, yes. You didn't finish reading the book and there should be a quest for getting to the end of the book.

Ah, I had the amulet on so I didn't even realise this was the case. The amulet is simply better since it does not use a spell slot so I'll keep using it anyways. Thanks for clarifying this.

P sure book's reward doesn't use a spell slot

book speak with dead doesnt use a spell slot and is a class action, book also gives +1 to all wisdom rolls and has a second part of the questline that gives something.

If you pass all checks you get talk to dead spell and a modifier on some rolls, however the book slams shut and you can't finish the quest till you get to baldura gate in act 3

What? no, the book gives you the ability "Talk with Dead" as an ACTION and doesnt cost a spell slot either which means it allows you to equip a much better amulet.

so Gale does not consume the book to deal with his illness? Thats what I wanted the book for, to give it to him to consume, now I cant! And if I dont give him something, he will leave!
I already have the amulet, Gale seems to be wanting magical items to consume much too often!!

Check the local vendors - I think some of them have items that can be consumed by Gale.
