Multiclassing consequences
I cannot find any adequate answer on the internet so you are my last hope. Should I multiclass my companions, for example Wyll into warlock/rogue would I lose his plot/quests/personality? Question goes to all other companions as I play mostly for plot but more roguish Wyll and more fighty Shadowheart would be great. Sven said sth along the lines if you changed their class they would lose their story etc but what about multiclasses? Shadowheart is still a cleric of shar but more fighty, for example.

The question is more do they have the stats to make the multiclass work. For warlock/rogue on Wyll he needs good points into dex and charisam.

Yeah I know. But lets assume they all are able

You can respec every companion in whatever, it will have no impact on whatever you can imagine. They stay the same.

If they are able too then go for it, nothing will change in the story and their story. Warlock/Rogue is a good pairing.

For myself. I dont like multclasses. I think you gimp yourself more than it helps. Well, most of the time. My Warlock is lvl 10 now and got his 3 Eltrich beams. Maybe, i multiclass the last two levels.

Multiclass can be very strong like Paladin/Warlock

I can see why. Warlocks are surprisingly strong in melee when they use pact weapons. I bet Pala because of heavy armor.

Take at least one last level in Warlock to get your 6th level spell.

Then if you went Pact of the Blade, no one-level dip in anything will get you the same returns as getting to Warlock 12 and taking Lifedrinker. Although, depending on your race, you might want the armour proficiencies... but then you should probably start as a Fighter (proficient with every armour and CON saves) and get 11 levels of Warlock next.

Hm, not a bad idea.

Yeah, Paladin/warlock is a popular multiclass. Warlock/Rogue is a good pairing too though needs time to get it going.

As far as I can see, the only downside to multiclass is skill/spell progression. You wont get as many spells as a fighter/sorc as you would if you went pure sorc for example. But there are other benefits to doing it. Like my sorc/lock at level 3 can cast magic missile 5 times in one fight, three times in the next fight and twice the time after that.

Does mean I'm probably not going to get level 5-6 spells, but I can spam low level ones instead. And the warlock ones will ALWAYS be at the highest level possible. So I can at level 5, 2 sorc/ 3 lock, cast I think three level one MM as a base line, and two level two MM. And the level two ones can be replenished on short rest. Quite a lot of 100% hit spells, doing an average 3 damage per missile. Combine that with a potion of speed, and you get a huge burst of damage.

Just a shame there's only a couple of ways to replenish spells without resting. I guess you could go for a few into wizard too to get the spell slot refresher, but not sure if that would be worth it. Though you could also learn spells too if you did that.

Only multiclass if you really understand what you are doing, otherwise you can make your character much weaker.

If you are this confused about multi-classing then no you shouldn't do it.

So far the biggest issue for me in terms of multiclassing is the handling of additional attacks[baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com].

I've a lvl 2 Paladin / lvl 4 Barbarian and thus have - despite being lvl 6 in character level no second attack yet (which comes for Paladin and Barabarian with lvl 5). This is something which annoys me - as I liked the "BAB" mechanics more of previous DnD ruleset iterations.

So you'd want to go Paladin 5 or Barbarian 5 before dipping into multiclassing. Or Bard 6. Fighters should go all the way to 11 and only dip into one other class (as max level is 12).
