If they are able too then go for it, nothing will change in the story and their story. Warlock/Rogue is a good pairing.
Multiclass can be very strong like Paladin/Warlock
Then if you went Pact of the Blade, no one-level dip in anything will get you the same returns as getting to Warlock 12 and taking Lifedrinker. Although, depending on your race, you might want the armour proficiencies... but then you should probably start as a Fighter (proficient with every armour and CON saves) and get 11 levels of Warlock next.
Yeah, Paladin/warlock is a popular multiclass. Warlock/Rogue is a good pairing too though needs time to get it going.
Does mean I'm probably not going to get level 5-6 spells, but I can spam low level ones instead. And the warlock ones will ALWAYS be at the highest level possible. So I can at level 5, 2 sorc/ 3 lock, cast I think three level one MM as a base line, and two level two MM. And the level two ones can be replenished on short rest. Quite a lot of 100% hit spells, doing an average 3 damage per missile. Combine that with a potion of speed, and you get a huge burst of damage.
Just a shame there's only a couple of ways to replenish spells without resting. I guess you could go for a few into wizard too to get the spell slot refresher, but not sure if that would be worth it. Though you could also learn spells too if you did that.
I've a lvl 2 Paladin / lvl 4 Barbarian and thus have - despite being lvl 6 in character level no second attack yet (which comes for Paladin and Barabarian with lvl 5). This is something which annoys me - as I liked the "BAB" mechanics more of previous DnD ruleset iterations.
So you'd want to go Paladin 5 or Barbarian 5 before dipping into multiclassing. Or Bard 6. Fighters should go all the way to 11 and only dip into one other class (as max level is 12).
