Turns out that since it's a reaction you can go to the reaction menu and turn it off completely so that you are never asked to use it.
Which is actually the best option because there is another ability that says when you get an enemy to less hit points than illithid powers you have unlocked they instantly die.
You can still get the power for the extra 1 hp of instant death it provides and then just turn it off so that you never have to deal with it.
Works for me :)
plus theres enough in the game to unlock every single one of them, exspecially if you dont want to turn into a full illithid
